There's long been rumors of garlic with brewers yeast being fed to a dog working as an effective flea deterrent. Supposedly it makes the dog's blood taste bad to the fleas (kind of like people who eat a lot of garlic tend to smell kind of garlicky). But in my experience it's BS. I've dealt with two dogs with serious flea problems and tried garlic/brewers yeast in the food, and the results were non existent. I guess there's a chance of it working to deter fleas if there is no problem, but if you have an existing flea problem and you're trying to get the fleas to go away, no it doesn't work. I think it's a total waste of time and money, you're far better served applying a good topical anti flea med like advantage/advantix or frontline.
Thank you for the info, I have heard of vet's giving pregnant and nursing female's a pill form flea killer? Does anyone know what's in it? And can it be offered to all dog's and pup's? What are some organic flea treatments?
brewers/garlic is the only organic anti flea med i know of. I know frontline shouldn't be used on nursing female dogs, not sure bout advantage. I guess the best bet there is to make sure your dog is flea-free before it has pups so you dont have to worry bout putting the stuff on the pups until theyre 5 or 6 weeks old.
there is one pill form of flea medication called program. the active ingredient is called lufeneron. look it up and see whether it is safe for pregnant dogs cause i am not sure. and it isnt a flea killer. what it does is after a flea bites your pet the medication cause the breaking tooth on the baby flea not to develop so the fleas inside the eggs cannot break out of the eggs and create a bigger population of fleas in your home. so it won't kill the fleas on your pet but it will prevent the existing fleas from multiplying.
Harley I have tried the garlic however so far knock on wood non of my dogs have had fleas. Just did it to try and prevent anything that might hop my way. Let me tell you one thing if the bad tasting blood would not deter the fleas the GAS would. Unless you live in a house with a ventilation system DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME. My house literally stunk for days.It is one of the few times the dogs slept in the laundry room.
