Wendy- I am not trying to knock you when I say that most people don't understand what's happening when they buy a "designer" dog at all! I didn't even know it was bad to buy from a pet store until I came to this forum. That is where I got Ace from (a pet store). So, really, I supported to some BYB or puppy mill as well. I hope I didn't offend anyone. =0) **Kris, Abby, Ace and Summer Ace: http://www.dogster.com/?41494 Abby: http://www.dogster.com/?50370 Summer: http://www.dogster.com/?70413
FYI aisha i have a life 2 i cant stay up at this computer 24/7 i had to put my little girls to bed and many people are uneducated about dogs and classify them as what they look like and when they buy a "cockapoo" or a "labradoodle" they are thinking of them as breeds not mixes or you know they just think if everyone else is getting them i want one to lots of people get them because they know someone who has 1 and want 1 to. also i think they are kind of a fad not the dog of the future or anything
>standard poodles and mini poodles and whatevr are feminine snappy and over bred they arent that kid friendly and are real prissy these people are just supplying the demand just like when 101 dalmaations came out every one wanted a spotted dog! < If poodles are feminine and snappy then why do you own three poodle mixes freako? You could have just had a golden, lab and malti isntead of feminine snappy mixes as you call them. Also, almost EVERY breed of dog that is female is feminine. Male poodles can be very robust and masculine.
I say we just ignore the post. it seems like every other week there is an arguement with someone other these really expensive mutts. And everyone always says the same thing. "go to your local shelter is you want a mutt" or "if you have an allergy get a standard or toy poodle" . I'm kind of bored with the topic. But I'm know people will just tell me to ignore it then. Well personally I think we are wasting bandwidth.LOL I just had to say that. Kim Oscars pics http://www.dogster.com/?50558
what bothers me about some designer mutt owners and small dog owners (notice the word SOME, not all) are that they are always carrying them around. I sometimes wonder if those poor little dogs ever get to walk anywhere. The poo mixes are all the rage in Hollywood and big cities now, I see pics of "stars" with their poo mixes in chanel doggie carriers, and people carry them around here in the city. It's like, sheesh, let the dog WALK, ok? Big pet peeve of mine.
Ditto! I mean, I carry Allie, but not EVERYWHERE! Yup, doggydoodle, we love your dogs, but not the reason you bought them, or the people who bred them. If I ever type a designer mutt breed, I put it in quotes because it's not real. See, when you type a breed name, all the real common breeds show up as a link to a page aout the breed, like this: Chihuahua But when you do it with "Labradoodle," see what happens: Labradoodle Oh, my! It's not a breed, is it? I guess ADMIN figured it out, too! LOL ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596
Guess everyone has a right to their opinion on this topic. I see opinions where you "don't hate the dogs, but the breeders who do this". If your beef is with the breeders, then why do some of you feel it is necessary to criticize those who buy the dogs rather than.... just sticking to criticizing the breeders. Not everyone buying these dogs are as educated as you are.... the breeders for the most part, probably are. I have two children - one is perfectly normal (except for his sense of humor), the other has sever handicaps. It seems to me that a perfect (purebred - you all keep talking about "good" breeders are trying to improve the breed.) dog vs. a not so perfect (mutt/designer dog) might be a similar comparison. I didn't go to the hospital asking for a perfect baby, just hoped for one ("get one from the shelter" - Ooooh, so you CAN find perfect dogs at the shelters.). I didn't get what most people would consider - a perfect baby (but, she's still perfect to me). I didn't return her or give her to an adoption agency. I didn't pay any less, or more for her. Not one person every critized us for intentionally breeding her! Question - if everyone is so concerned about the poor dogs in shelters and overpopulation, then why are you buying purebreds (also at outrageous prices) OR designer dogs/mutts from anywhere but shelters????? If EVERYONE got their dogs from the shelters - it would lower the dog population overall because the breeders (purebred or designer or whatever) would no longer have a good market OR be able to charge the outrageous $$$$$ for ANY dog. Maybe an extreme measure would be to require that dogs can only be sold through shelters (like that is even possible!!!!) As long as there are people who love dogs - there will be breeders, pet stores, shelters, rescues..... all of it. People will continue to get the dog they want. There should be no room to criticize anyone if we aren't buying from the shelter ourselves. We should not be trying to tell people to get a purebred (or mutt) from a shelter, if we aren't doing that ourselves. So - let's put this subject to rest for good!!!!! There is nothing any of us can do, but TRY to educate (without criticizing).
OMG, doggydoodle what WERE you thinking. Either you were aching for a breaking, or you did not know any better. I do not understand how people can know exactly how and why dog breeders do what they do. You can't possibly know why each and every breeder breds the dogs that they do. People are never going to agree on this subject. The ones that buy from a shelter are never going to convince others to do the same. The same is true of the pure bred, and mixed breed owners. It is liking talking to a brick wall. Do you want everyone to think as you do. That is why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Let it go!
"standard poodles and mini poodles and whatevr are feminine snappy and over bred they arent that kid friendly and are real prissy these people are just supplying the demand just like when 101 dalmaations came out every one wanted a spotted dog!" Wow, you know nothing about a standard poodle. They are not feminine or snappy. Standard poodles are actually a great hunting dog, and very intelligent. They love children, and are FAR from feminine. I know more males with standard poodles than females, unless it is a family pet. Howabout you actually learn something about a dog before you start saying crap like that. Oh, just so ya know, my dog is a mutt. Not a designer mutt, a mutt that I got from a humane society, and guess what, he is a great dog. He was abused his whole life before the shelter got him, and I bet he is still better than any of your mutts.
Also, just so you know, I do know quite a bit about dogs. I went to prevet for a couple of semesters, before I changed my mind to groom instead. I have now been grooming dogs for a while, and I see first hand quite often the health problems and temperaments of all breeds and mutts that regularly come into the salon I work in.
Rudyluvr, I can see your point (sort of). Of course people didn't criticise you for your child. HOWEVER, wouldn't it be a totally different situation if people were purposely trying to make handicapped children? Or, regardless that this person is blind and deaf and this person has Downs Syndrome, we will still 'breed' them and hope for the best. And instead of shelters likes dogs, these special people lived in handicapped homes and the cute ones got adopted out and the ones with the major problems and not so attractive ones got killed? We wouldn't hate the handicapped child/adult. We would hate the idiots that had a hand in making them like that knowing the possible problems. And don't take this offensively....I too have a handicapped relative -- my little brother who's 23.
I think the point really is You can't compare people and dogs. People mate voluntarily because they are in a relationship and whether they have handicaps or not is irrelevant. It is their children that they will love no matter what. Dogs dont fall in love or voluntarily choose a mate. They have a primary drive to procreate like all animals. Because there are so many of them, it's our responsibility to be sure its done responsibly.
Personally, I like mixed dogs. The reason they are more expensive is that you SHOULD be getting copies of the parent dogs papers when you get your mixed pup AND the pup should be registerable with a reputable agency like the SCBCA. They are the only organization I have seen that tries to put a cap on the ever so popular 'lets breed anything to anything' mix, although Im sure there are others.' They also offer positive ID for dogs which helps keep them out of shelters. If you are not getting this information with your dog - you shouldn't be paying for it (the dog). You also need to get your pup from a breeder list provided by one of the reputable registries. If we buy from our next door neighbor who decided to experiment with his dogs - that will encourage him to do it again. Stick with breeders who have some experience in dog breeding.
