Wendy, I'm not going to give advice because you already have really good ones from ltlgto (I do the scruff thing too, advice from my dog trainer here in S'pore and it WORKS!). What I wanted to say was, Toby is GORGEOUS!!!!! And I think I mentioned to you before but that pic of the two of you in a classic!
Thanks Jan! I appreciate that. He is my little angel. I might try the scruff thing. He is very small though, do you think it's o.k. to do that? The scruff is the top part of his neck right. Like where a mother cat would pick up her kitten? Just want to make sure I'm grabbing the right place. By the way, what is singapore like? That is so cool. Were you born there too?
Yes the scruff top part of the neck like where the cat would carry her kittens. It's fine to do with small dogs and definitely is a much better form of discipline than smacking. We run a "no smacking" household here in Singapore, which makes our friends roll their eyes and laugh at us. Fortunately we haven't had to use it very often with Winnie but the few times we have ie when she snaps (Winnie is a rescue dog who was very ill when she came to us and my partner tried to put ear drops for her ear infection and she bite him), we lift her off all four paws and say, "No!" very firmly. My trainer said that she had been smacked quite frequently and she showed us when she lifted her hand as if to smack her, Winnie cringed and her little eyelids started twitching. Now how sad is that? It also explains why Winnie doesn't like strangers to pet her head as it's the same motion as smacking. Yes I was born here 30+ years ago but I went to university in San Francisco and have lived in the UK and Qatar as well. We really have a great lifestyle here but the only thing I would change is that I wish the weather was a bit cooler. The groomer shaves Winnie like a jack russell every two months so that she isn't so hot in that long coat.
Oh Wendy, he is really cute and I think that they do this because they are so full of energy in the morning after sleeping all night. Poor pup wants a playmate and mommy is busy making up her face so toilet paper sounds good to him. Aisha is always getting into trouble in the mornings (see shoe post) and I think they are just bored or wanting attention. But you have to admit the paper trail is cute!
