And Nikko (Lab mix) allows her to do it! ChiChi (RT) will kick her off the bed, steal her treats, wake her up from a dead sleep, and she'll growl if she even thinks Nikko is coming near her when she's trying to relax. One swift bite on the butt and ChiChi would become dinner for Nikko, so why does she allow her to do it? Nikko is 7 years old, ChiChi is only 3, both have been with us since they were puppies. Any ideas why Nikko allows it and why ChiChi does it? Yelling doesn't help because then they both think I'm yelling at them. Spraying ChiChi doesn't help, she thinks it's fun! Any advice?
Sounds like 'little man syndrome' to me. Little dogs always like to think they're bigger and tougher no matter their size. I don't know how to fix that. If spraying doesn't work, I would just separate them when they eat or have bones. As far as the toys and such, I'm not too sure..sorry. Do you spray with water or vinegar? I would try vinegar. Right in the face. They hate that.
Really?? Spray her with Vinegar?? I use water, at first she flinches, but then she'll run closer to me and open her mouth...even if I am yelling at her NO! She's a weird dog. She must like punishment. Will vinegar hurt her eyes or anything though? Just wondering, have never heard of using vinegar in a spray bottle before. BTW, I just added my dogs on dogster. How do I include the link on this page? Thanks
Oh sorry, I should have been more clear...not vinegar in the eyes (although it wouldn't hurt them, but I wouldn't purposely do it). My vet recommended it. It's completely non toxic, no abbrassive and doesn't stain. But the odor bothers cats and dogs like none other. I would use a solution of half vinegar half water and spray towards the nose or mouth. It can't harm them at all. Usually this method is recommended if water doesn't work. That is funny about your dog and water. I can totally picture that! lol. I haven't put my dog on dogster yet either because my disk drive is broken. You might want to start a new thread asking about that, I know a lot of the members would know how to do it. Good luck! :)
Thank you for replying about the vinegar..I am going to try it as soon as I run out the store tomorrow and get some. Does your house and dog start smelling like vinegar though?? I know people use vinegar as a cleaning agent sometimes, but the smell alone would make me not want to mess with anything either.
WoW! I have the same situation. I have two dogs, one, a boxer, is 7 yrs. old as well, and my bichon is 3! They're both females. The little BF if constantly picking on the boxer. Every time I throw the ball out in the yard, BF always chases the boxer and bites at her heels. The boxer chases the tennis ball, while the bichon chases her! Also, sometimes, my boxer will just be laying in the house like a good girl and my bichon will just randomely come up and just on her, biting her ears, and all. It's just that she wants to play. The boxer ususally plays along, and will lay down and wrestle so that they are on the same level. When it gets to rough, the boxer will stand up and fight, and then the BF knows that she isn't the dominate one anymore. Also, the boxer will growl at her or nip back if she's annoyed and that will end it. Both of them seem to enjoy it. I think that your RT just wants to prove to the lab that it is more dominant. Maybe, it wants to show off to you!
lol, that is too funny, ChiChi is def. an attention getter. She does the same thing to Nikko, will bite at her ankles when she wants the ball. ChiChi could be laying down and if Nikko picks up the ball, ChiChi will go steal it from her and lay right back down, as if to say. No way Jose, if I'm not playing with it, neither are you. She is so selfish...I just hope that Nikko isn't depressed about it. Very cute about your Boxer and BF
If you use the vinegar, get the white vinegar. I kind of think it's win win because vinegar attacks odors as well, so when you spray it, it helps eliminate that kind of stuff. And bacteria. Vinegar's great! lol..I feel like that old man on "My big fat greek wedding" how he was obsessed with windex..hehe..I'm obsessed with vinegar :)
if nikko is passive about letting chi chi be the boss then why not just let them be ? it may seem unfair to us only because nikko has been with you longer but dogs don't play by our rules. as long as chi chi is not being aggressive to the point of inflicting injury on nikko then i would just let them work it out between them.
the little one is being more dominant, and the big one doesn't mind. not really a problem unless it's a knock down drag out fight. i agree with scout, they have to work things out. my little pug will intimidate my border collie mix, who is older and bigger, and i just let them do it. except for food, i have to watch them then because it will turn in to a fight. and my lab, who is 75-80 pounds, will always go submissive if another dog challenges her, even a younger smaller one. it's just her.
I just feel bad for Nikko, but I guess others that are in the same situation with one dog bullying the other feel the same. They are both happy dogs, so you guys are right...just let it be...and realize that it's the nature of the beast. I am still going to use the vinegar trick for bad behavior. BTW...can dogs get depressed..and if so, how can you tell if they are?
