HI I was a member a while back , but lost my computer to a storm and just got a new one. wasnt on long before it happened but I am glad to come back. I got my little girl a maltese for christmas not real smart with the little dogs I have 1 mastiff and 1 great pyrenees. So he is really small to me. But i shaved his butt and he still gets poop on him when he goes any hints, its really nasty and STINKS!!!lol. when i wash it EVERYDAY!!! If anyone else has had this problem let me know. I love him he uses the puppy pad great but usually has poop all over the floor from scooting around with it on his butt. He drinks plenty water so it shouldnt be that. any hints would be great.
If he's scooting, he might have infected or impacted anal glands. That needs to be addressed by the vet. If the poop is loose, you should change his food to something that will give firmer stools and the butt will stay clean.
Didn't I learn from other posts that pure canned pumpkin will help firm it up? I tried it with my pups and of course, the one that needs it the most would not eat it. I need to mix it up better in his food. My female licked it up-no problem.
well he is on iams puppy, spelling not right im sure dont have the bag in front of me im in trouble. and he was just at the vet no worms or any problems. He said he just probably doesnt get it all out before he starts to sit and try to look at it..LOL No its not runny or messy just he makes it that way. Like i said Im used to the big dogs they get it all out!!!lol thanks for the help
If his butt is shaved and he's still smelling stinky like poop, I have to wonder about his anal glands. It's something that normally larger dogs do fine by themselves, but some smaller dogs have to have them "expressed" to get the nasty out. One of the main symptoms is the icky smell. Mention it when you take him to the groomer's and see what they come up with.

Having squeeze many an anal glad, I'd take him to the vet before the groomer to have his glands checked. He should be heading there anyway, so rbing it up and they can check if they are impacted or full.
Also, is he possibly eatting hair or something that is causing his fecies to stick to him or giving him discomfort and the feeling that he has not emptied his bowels?
ho mastiffmom - welcome back to the forum. i had a pyrenees. she was a wonderful dog. some long haired dogs and cats just get poop stuck to the hair around their butt. keeping the hair shaved back there and maybe using baby wipes when he is finished will help keep him clean. just make sure it is not an anal gland problem. left untreated they can become impacted and abscess and then you will have a bigger smellier mess on your hands.
thanks so much for everybodies help. the gland problem i had the vet check already last week at his check up. Thats when we shaved his little butt, and the groomer there checked him out after the vet and no problems there. we watch him sometimes go to the pad its not as bad since we shaved him but it still gets on him. he is 12 wks old and the vet said he has seen poeple bring them in with poop on there butts... like its suposed to be there .. thats nasty uh.. but when i watch him go he kinda sits down soon as he does i... then there you are . I think that has alot to do with the training i did with him to use the pad . I would praise him and give him his toy when he pooped i think he sits and waits for his toy even if im not there so if the poop isnt all the way out he sits on it. I watched him this morning and it hit me I think its what i have done. So i am going to change his way of doing things. Iam going to stand away from him when he goes and hold his favorite toy and let him learn to start going after it when he is done. I do alot of training and this works with other dogs on different things so i will try that. But thanks so much for the relys jsut dont know much about the little guys.I call him a little mastiff he makes as much mess as mine does..lOl
If the poo is on the soft side, add the canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie with the spices...to the food. Just a spoonful will help wonders. I would give my Bichon a small treat after going. I too keep her butt area very short.
You guys are great...kinda makes this a little funny now. lalayla every time he does this now i will thinkof your daughter steping in it, and maybe it wont seem so bad to clean it up. Yes he gets really excited after he poops he is so smart he caught on really quick to the pad, so i guess i will quit getting upset with him when i have to wash him...everyday.. But really you guys are great, such cute stories on here!!!!!!! thanks a bunch
Hi! I just read your posting and I have a 14 week old maltese boy -- Henry. luckily, i have not had too much of a problem with the poop sticking to his bottonm -- only the the length of time it takes him to poop after he eats (2 or three hours). How did you get yours to poop "on shcedule""?? Also, have you had problems keeping him "white". I just bathed mine two days ago and he is already yeloow/grayish. He gets so dirty, even though he is inside all day. He does like to roll on the newspaper that I have laid out for him to use asa bathroom. SO, that is why he gets dirty probably, but now I am trying to get him to use a puppy pad. Thanks
