hi, my eight year old lab mix is developing cataracts in one of her eyes. I took her in for a physical and that is when we found it. Is this normal due to her being eight and a half years old?, and should I take her into a vet who can do a complete eye exam? Does anyone know if this could be inherited or just normal age? Any suggestions on how to slow the process down would be great; I would not want her to go blind! Thanks!
Ask your vet to refer you to a AVCO certified Veterinarian, who can do an eye test on your dog and offer some advice on how to care for it. It might be old age, 8 and a half can be old for some breeds of dogs, but there also might be something you can do to ease the troubles.
The cataracts are the round lens part inside the eye, behind the pupil. This gets foggy/cloudy. It could be from a past eye injury. Dogs who suffer chronic diseases/immune diseases are the most likely to develope cataracts. Dogs that have skin allergies, hip dysplasia and ear problems will develope cataracts as they get older. And its common in diabetic dogs. Only prevention of these chronic problems can help avoid the condition, and even then, theres no way to know for sure.
