I use Frontline monthly on all of my dogs. Frontline does not cover mosquitos...and Advantix does. Then I see in a catalog that Bio Spot covers everything that Frontline does..PLUS mosquitos...at a FRACTION of the cost, however it does not say it is waterproof. Advantix says only that it is water resistant, while Frontline is waterproof. We moved to an area with plenty of mosquitos. My dogs are frequently wet. Should I change brands ?? Anyone use Bio Spot ?? Advantix ??
I think both Frontline and Advantix work well, but the effectiveness varies between dogs - This isn't really a very good answer to your question, but If I were you I think I would try one - if it works, stick with it, if it doesn't, try the other and see. I have also had instances where one will work great for a while, then all of a sudden stop - causing me to switch to something else for a while - then back again. Crazy.
I used biospot once (I live in alabama) and the results were laughable. It was like I never even applied it honestly. I asked my vet about it and he gave me The Look, you know, the one that says, "Ok I'm not going to tell you not to buy it if you're determined, but I consider it a waste of money because it doesn't work." Then he said that Biospot worked about as long as 'Off' spray worked on the human body. However! That said, if it works on your dog (and I suppose it might) go for it. Dont' be surprised if it doesn't though. Maybe it's just coated breeds that it doesn't work on, it definitely didn't work on my mixed breed dog (who has hair the lenght and texture of a border collies) or my Akita, and I have friends who tried it on their akitas, and it didn't work on them either. Advantix works incredibly. It will kill any flea on your dog within an hour of application. I never had to reapply it more than once a month despite baths, but I never bathe my dog more than once a month unless they roll in something vile. Frontline works, I personally prefer it to advantix just because it does last longer (up to 90 days for flea control but only 30 days for tick control). But frontline doesn't work on all dogs as effectively.
Oh, I agree, I don't think much of Biospot either - and really I have yet to figure out how, much less how well advantix works as far as repelling mosquitoes goes - It does work well on fleas tho. I should find out its mosquito repelling effectiveness soon enough as I am currently residing in the mosquito capitol of the US!
Thanks for the info !! I suspected as much about Biospot...most times you get what you pay for. Think I'll just stick with Frontline and not worry about mosquitos unless they become a real problem !! The dogs I show, usually need a bath more than once a month, so something that shampoo does not wash off is pretty important. I know Frontline lasts the entire month...bath or not.
