I have only had my puppy for 3 days, and I really am not not sure of its gender? WHen i picked the pup up I was told she was a female, but i really am not so sure... and im really confused as Ive called her Hannah, and bought tags and alsorts.
Can anyone offer advice on how to tell what gender she is? I know that vets a breeders should tell you, but im not so confident about the breeder. Thanks very much

Im not sure if its in the belly button region but there is a spigot of some sort there. Does the way they pee make a difference? I feel awful now if it is a boy, as hes gonna think im a turkey... no wonder he bites me!
The reason I questioned it was the fact that there does seem to be a male sexual organ in that area, albeit very small...
This is my first dog and I dont realy know much about them, hence my confusion. If it was a female would there be nothing there?
First of all, I'm sorry but this is funny..I'm laughing hard right now...
I can understand how ya might be confused, though. If he's really young, you won't be able to tell by how it pees - they all squat at that age. Hell, my pit bull is over a year old and he still squats.
If there is a spigot where the belly button should be, then yes it is a boy. If there's a little nub right between the legs, under the tail, its a girl.
LOL, don't feel to bad a friend on my just bought a male horse, only when he sent someone to pick it up they brought back a female! Bad part is they didn't even realize it until a whole day later! Hmm.. I can understand a puppy mix up but well with horses it is pretty obvious! Anyway if you go to a search engine like yahoo or google and type your question in I am sure they are probably sights on how to sex a puppy along with pictures, I have seen them for cats, rabbits., and guinea pigs so I am sure they are simular illustrations for dogs. Sometimes a picture can help!
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people. I DO NOT mean that at all, just giving you a hard time..lol. See you are new, welcome. I had a situation similar to that only regarding rabbits, sorry I was of no help. Happens on a daily basis.
Boy Chris your in a spot...Donít you have another vet in your area...if so...just drop in on a drive by and run in and ask...you will be so embarrassed you wont want to go there any way...so good thing it isnít your normal vet...But...if you just bought this pup...you really DO need to get it seen ASAP...go to any vet if you have to...Many breeders want you to get them seen to validate the guarantees they have some state they must be seen with in 48 hours of purchase...I love Lilgto's explanation of genitalia...a spigot...lol...you poor thing. Just run into any vet...the helpers at the desk can tall you...
Hi, here is my dogster site, if you scroll down, there is a picture of my pup when SHE was about 10 weeks old. Notice that the vulva is lower more towards her legs. A males genitalia would be higher up on the belly, wether its big or small. What breed is it. Also in pups the scrotum(testes) have not droped yet. http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=75322&j=t
Take the pup and lay her on her back and rub her belly from the ribs to inside the back legs. If there is any noticeable drag on your hand in the middle then she's a boy. If it's nice and warm and smooth she's the girl you thought she was. LOL
I have to tell everyone, that the website I'm going to post that I found has some pictures of a Shih Tzu whelping, even though it is a natural event and doesn't sicken me, it may sicken some people on here.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and it shows two puppies genital area...one male...and one female.
"the guys lift up thier legs like you see in the movies and in cartoons. girls usually squat (at least thats what my friend's dog does)."
Actually Alexandra boy puppies pee the same as girls until they are older usually around 10 -12 months of age male dogs begin to lift their leg. Although I have seen some male dogs who never lift their leg.
