This morning our youngest Chinese Shar-Pei woke up with her muzzle swollen and her eyes were swollen(almost shut).I gave her some Benadryl and the swelling has left in her muzzle and around her eyes. But her vaginal area is now swollen and her anus looks like a bubble is sticking out. I took her to the vet and they gave her a shot of steroids and put her on Rimadyl. The vet is not sure what has caused this. She thinks that maybe an insect has bitten her. I was wondering if anything like this has happened to anyone else? Especially with the anal area? Thanks in advance.
The only thing that ever happened like that to my dogs was red blister like bumps all over Pipers private area . They looked very painful, but never bothered her at all. They went away after 3 weeks or so,but they where very red and swollen.
Swelling is a common problem in shar-peis, usually associated with a high fever. I have no idea what could of caused it, but I would take her to the vet if I were you. Sounds like Shar-Pei fever alright. Give her some time, and bring her fever down. It is not an insect bite, definatley Shar-Pei fever. The vet is doing a good job. Shar-Pei fever causes the dog's joints to swell. I don't know about the anal area, but Shar-Pei fever is life threatning! Good luck, Tracey
She didnt run a fever and her hocks werent swollen so the vet said that she didnt think that it was Shar-Pei fever. Our other pei has had bouts with Shar -Pei fever and it wasnt like what she has. He will lay around and not move and doesnt want to be touched when he is having an episode with a fever. She is the complete opposite! She is still running around here like a whirlwind! lol ! None of this seems to be bothering her. She goes back to the vet tomorrow to let them check her bottom to see if the swelling has gone down but I doubt that it will be(her bottom is swollen bad). The swelling in her vaginal area has gone down now too.
I have had something similar to this happen to a chow/lab mix that belonged to my roommate in college. His whole face swelled up, and his lips and gums. We suspect that he chewed on some plant that he had an allergic reaction to, because we knew he frequently was outside tearing up the plants around a particular pine tree in our yard. It may have been caused by an insect bite, I suppose. But when you have a black dog, it's hard to find a bite mark!
Ozzy my male has had a few swellings like this, he reacts when hes bitten by insects(fleas to). Even misquitos will make his face swell. Hes been bitten on the bum and that swelled to. His eye lids get so swollen he couldn't see. I carry injectable(from the vet) with me, for these problems.Especially when I go up north during black fly season.Yikes!
