This is an excellent article about "pit bulls." I admit to being very confused about the topic, especially after reading some impassioned posts here from people who own American Staffordshire Terriers and American Pitbull Terriers. I think this gives a very fair and balanced take on the issue.
Please excuse me for what im about to post but ive seen the damage a "PIT-BULL" can do "DEATH" is the one of the outcomes of a "PIT-BULL" mameing and disfiguration is another the is NO such thing as a nice "PIT-BULL"~!!!!!!!!!!!SORRY!!!!!!!!! Ive seen and witnass the aftermath and destruction of an animal and human or otherwise!!!!!!! Unfortunatly its NOT the animals fault its the HUMANS that have breed that kind of disposition into them!!!!!!!!!!!Once again im sorry but until you have truly seen it for real what a "PIT-BULL"is capable its hurendous and senseles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't really feel like getting into this because it's the same pissing match over and over, but for the sake of my dogs I will.I own 2 female Pit Bulls and have owned 3 others , R.I.P my 3 sweet babies.I would never own any dog I feel that would be some sort of a threat to the human population , but yes Pit Bulls are animal aggressive some more then others. Many years of breeding for fighting , this has become a genetic trait in the breed. It is not breed standard for a Pit Bull to be human aggressive , and if one is it should be humanely euthanized. I'm sorry for what you have had to deal with. Not one breed of dog is more predisposed for aggression.Granted there are bad Pit Bulls that do bite and have killed , but this is not the breed norm. Just like there are bad Labs or Goldens , or Poodles for christ sake. Thanks to the media for sensationalizing every pit Bull bite , this has created breed hysteria. I just went through this same crap at work today.I'm getting sick and tired of ignorance , but I know it's not the publics fault , the media created this , along with stupid owners , bad breeders , macho owners, and ignorance. I love my dogs , I love Pit Bulls , and Pit Bulls are sweet gentle natured dogs that are very misunderstood. Just take a look at Petey from the Little Racals. The list goes on and on. Some are heroes in America right now. Dakota, Tahoe , Cheyanne, Neville, Popsicle , the list goes on. Google these Pit Bulls and find out their achievements. I'm through.
As a non-pitbull owner, I thought it was a good article. I think pit bulls, staffordshire terriers, etc. are beautiful dogs to look at. So solid and intelligent. I am, however, very reluctant to approach one if I'm at Petsmart or elsewhere and I'll tell you why. About 20 years ago I had a cocker spaniel (adopted from the Bide-A-Wee). I lived in an apartment complex and my neighbors across the hall had a beautiful female pit bull. Their dog was very well behaved. She loved to be petted and seemed very friendly even towards my dog. The owners always had her on a leash as I did with my dog. One morning, my husband, my dog and I were leaving our apartment to go on a trip. My dog was leashed. As we stood in the hall locking the door, our neighbor's dog came running down the hall and attacked my dog. I guess since it was very early, the owners didn't expect to see anyone as they came in from a walk. The owners tried everything to get their dog off mine. She finally let go and my dog ran down the hall. We found her cowering in the stairwell, very badly bleeding. Our neighbors were so distraught about what happened, crying and apologizing. They paid the vet bills, which were considerable. The pit just missed severing Angel's jugular. She survived and lived many more happy years. The neighbors gave the dog to an uncle who had alot of property. They were truly very sorry. I wish I knew what caused that dog to do what she did. Was it the fact that she knew she wasn't under her owner's control at that moment? I still believe that they are not a "bad" breed, but I'll never forget that horrible morning.
If you read what I said about animal aggression , the dog was doing what comes natural to them. They where bred for many years for fighting. If more owners would educate them selves about how to properly handle these dogs , less things like that would happen. The dogs owners should've been better educated on how to properly handle the dog.
wow this is a very interesting article. I think the number of pitbull attacks are on the rise because their are so many of them. People are selling them for cheap because people don't want to buy these dogs. Teenagers might want to get one of these dogs because it might make them cool and macho. So they buy a pup and train it to be ferocious. Since their are so many pitbull breeders, a pitbull can easily be replaced if injured or killed. In San Francisco their are a huge population of pitbulls and as you can see many of the maulings have taken place around the bay area. I think neutering pitbulls for free, which many shelters intend on doing will significantly lower the number of attacks.
bullies... go away. I'm sick of people talking like they know everything when really they know nothing.
Pit bulls passed their temperment tests 80% of the time. Most other dogs barely reached that. Including beagles, cocker spaniels, etc.
It's the owners, not the dogs.
AND the reason you see sooooo many news articles saying "pit bull attack" is because there are about a dozen different breeds they consider a "pit bull" and don't forget the dogs that just look like one or have a big head.

The whole pitbulls are vicious killers thinking is the same thinking that caused the cicil rights movment. what was it dr. king (the greatest american ever i believe) said judge me not by the color of my skin but by the content of my charcter.
you know my family members have always had dogs. Once a pitt bull named Humphrey bit my cousin and she bears the scar. No we did not put Humphrey down he was their family pet. She had a few stitches and is fine. For that matter my bothers (twins) one hit the other over the head with a hammer. Boy that bled alot. We didn't put my brother down either. A few years ago my brother was riding in a truck with his friend. The friend was drunk they wrecked and my brother was killed. The friend did some time. But he didn't get the death penalty. Nor did we ban young men over 21 in the state of Fl. JMO but why aren't they banning snake owning?
