Do you think its better to get puppy rottweiler or a maybe one like a year or younger? We are going to get a rottie and have been looking,but have not found the right one yet. We are going to adopt. Also I was wondering if you knew of any sites besides petfinder.com that have rotties for adoption? Thank you

You can go either route. Often good breeders have older puppies that may be available for one reason or another.

An older puppy or dog that has been well socialized can integrate quite well into your home, and you miss some of the puppy stuff that can be not so fun like house and crate training, and mouthing.

If you can tell me your general area, I can recommend some Rescues for you to speak to. Are you interested at all in speaking to breeders, or did you want to stick with a rescued dog?

Be VERY careful taking an older dog from a shelter or petfinder. I'm not saying you won't find a good dog there, but some dogs have been released because of temperament issues, and you don't want to find that out the hard way.

We are located in Indiana. We have 2 rescues in Indiana that I know of,but my dad does not want to have any home visits.We are very open to breeders,but we have not found any good ones around here for a reasonable price.Even an individual selling a dog would be alright. We wouldnt care if he/she was a mix just as long as it looked like rottie (colors,hair,tail docked) We dont want any shrimp rotties either. Nothing less than 70 lbs. Thank You very much

Why doesn't your dad want them to do a home visit. They are just checking to make sure you have a fence and can provide a good home. We do home visits for our prospective homes and we aren't even a full breed rescue.

well he is very private about his personal stuff. He was in the milatary for 26 years and was a command sargent major.He just feels that that is unnessary. He wants to take the dog home the first day.Thats another thing we dont have a fenced in yard. we will when we move but we dont now.in the 3 years of living here we havent lost a dog.we take them to places all the time where they can run free all they want.I think the military has alot to do with it tho.

you need to call your vet to ask for help in finding someone in your area. Also you can google for rescues in your area. there is also a registry for breeders through AKC, so look at their website. Good Luck!

Red, can you try to be a little less abrupt, Cocker is a child. She is asking for quality info and cannot control what decisions her dad makes. Would it hurt for you to refer her to a rescue? After all they are not going to adopt to her without a home visit, but she could call them. They might give her more info about the breed.

Thanks Thlynda,for sticking up for me.I dont know if red knew I was a child.Red or anybody do you know of a site like petfinder? We just want a good,loving dog.its either a rottweiler or a newfoundland.Big difference in price but I think we can find one in rescue.We got one of our cockers from a cocker rescue and they dont do home visits.alot of rescues up here dont require one.If anyone knows of a rottweiler for adoption in Indiana plz contact me.

Rescues and even some breeders do home checks to make sure that the person who is adopting the dog is being truthful about who they are presenting themselves to be.
Put it to your father like this. Dad, what if I wanted to take piano lessons or ballet and the instructor would not allow you to see the place I would be taking lessons. Or dad what if I wanted to go over to a friend's house and visit but thier parents would not allow you to see where they lived or see them or their home. Or my favorite...dad, what if you wanted to buy a new car and the dealership would not allow you to test drive it or even look under the hood.

The road works two ways.

Explain to your dad there are evil people in this world who do HORRIBLE things to animals. And these places, often have first hand experience with animal victims, know this...and checking on the home is just their way of making sure that its not a obvious danger zone.

Yes, I do understand you are a child.

As a longtime fancier of the Rottweiler breed, I do not feel that homes with no fencing are suitable for these dogs.

Neither I, nor any other responsible breeder, nor rescue organization would place any dog in any home we are forbidden to visit.

Add that to your lack of fencing, and you come up with the fact that the only place you are going to be able to acquire a dog is from a shelter where the dog has not been evaluated, or a breeder who does not CARE if you let them inspect or see your home.

Almost all Rottweilers are territorial in nature. Fencing is for the protection of the dog, of course, but with Rottweilers, fencing is also for the protection of the community.

How do you intend to exercise a dog with no fencing?

Rottweilers are generally an active and athletic breed of dog.

Particularly if you get a puppy, a dog needs somewhere to go out and about and just be a dog for a while when the weather is nice.

I"m sorry, but for me, fencing is not optional with Rottweilers, and neither are home checks.

I found a rottie for $450 a female in Muncie, IN. They are also going to have other pups ready to go soon. I would say look around I bet you can find one!

I have a GSD and I DO NOT have a fence. I want a fence just for privacy. We are going to hopefully put one up next year. Well anyway my point is my GSD was trained at our old house that did not have a fence NOT to go past that pretend line! He did not go past the line there and he does not do it here. He will bark like crazy at people, but will not pass the boundry I set up for him in my yard. He is a great dog that if you call his name and say come he practically nose dives into the ground from stopping so fast! He rocks!

My point is you can train any dog. I hardly did any training for him he caught on right away. If you don't have a fence which everyone wants when having a pet, but maybe cant get till a couple years. You can train your dog not to go past the areas you set for him. I do not put my dog on a leash in the backyard. I never liked that idea. He is very well behaved. Even the neighbors say so! One more thing.

Rottweilers can have many inherited issues that responsible breeders screen for.

If the breeder of the $450.00 bargain basement puppies is not screening hips, elbows, eyes, hearts, and competing with dogs to ensure correct temperament and type, RUN THE OTHER WAY.

These dogs are powerful, confident, territorial, and can be dominant.

A correct dog has little inhibition about biting a person if they feel it is justified, including YOU if you have not done your homework and brought the dog up properly.

A correct Rottweiler is a stand up dog, and not for inexperienced or ill prepared owners.

Dogs who are expected to stay within a boundary with no confines will sooner or later end up dead in the street, stolen, or off breeding a bitch a half mile away that they happened to smell in season.

Rottweilers will NOT honor a "trained boundary" when they feel someone is invading their territory. The VAST majority of Rottweilers will confront vigorously any person or animal they feel to be on their territory if they are not quite familiar with them.

Please, before you decide to get a $400 dog from a newspaper, think about why you cannot qualify for a dog from a Recue org or a responsible breeder.

My breed pays the price for irresponsible breeding and ownership everytime a Rottweiler is put in a position of making the wrong decisions and possibly biting or injuring someone because if it's inherited territorial nature.

If YOUR dog bites or injures someone, you stand to lose your dog, and if it's a severe injury, you could lose all you own plus go to jail if the dog was in any way not properly confined.

Owning a Rottweiler is a RESPONSIBILITY.

Please don't ANY of you take it lightly.

Redyre, my family must have had the exception to the rottweiler breed. When I was little we got Sasha (purebred rott) as an xmas gift. I dont know where my parents got her from, some breeder I assume, I was too young to care. She was a GREAT dog. She wasn't like any of those things that you described. She wasn't dominant, territorial, or anything like that. I have no doubt that she would have protected my family if she needed to but she never showed any signs of it.

My aunt laughs about her to this day when she's brought up because one day when no one was home, my aunt came in to get something. She couldnt find Sasha....looked looked, finally found her asleep in my parents bed. She never even got up to see who was at the door. My aunt laughed at our 'guard dog'.

Anyways, Im sure they aren't all like that...but Sasha lived to be 11 or 12 and never had any problems with my family or any of our friends. We had a yard but she was never in it. My cousin lived across the street and we werent allowed to do much at that age...so we walked Sasha ALLLLL day. Everyone knew us as the girls with the big dog. :)

But I do agree....if cocker's family wants a dog that bad they need to open up to a home inspection.

Acey, it's delightful that you have such warm memories of your childhood dog.

Your experiences are not typical, and your dog would not be considered to have had correct temperament.

In fact, I would not breed any Rottweiler that did not demonstrate a strong willingness to patrol my property and keep strangers out, nor would I breed one who would not rise to a threat.

You can find individuals who are lacking in that territorial and defense drive. They can make delightful companions, as you so fondly remember your dog.

However, one must keep in mind that this is not the correct temperament for the Rottweiler breed. One should not expect to find a dog with this temperament, nor go looking for one since it is not correct or typical.

It may be difficult for some to understand why breeders would want to keep this facet of temperament in the Rottweiler, however, it is one of the MAIN reasons why I selected these dogs in the very beginning to be my breed.

I was a young woman living and traveling a lot alone. I wanted a large powerful dog that had a visual intimidation value to a certain type of people. I wanted a smart trainable dog who was sociable and easy to take places, yet who would also defend me and my property with all they had if necessary.

This is the correct Rottweiler, and it is what I seek and pursue in my breeding.

You can think what you want you have VERY strong opinions. Obviously NOTHING will change your mind. My dog has never left its bondaries and will never leave! It is not like he is out there for hours. He is out to go potty and then come back inside. If we are out there he does not leave his area. We don't leave him out there hours on end. I was just saying if they are worried a dog will run off if you let them out to potty you can train them to potty and come back in not take off. Even with cats, birds ANYTHING! He does not chase them he does not go past his boundry. YOU CAN train anydog to be like that. I have had friends that had rotties and they were not mean dogs or crazy to chase someone. It all depends on the way you train them. If you have a over dominant dog that is mean you should not be breeding it in the first place!

Plus if you want a nice dog and dont want to spend much I think $450 is fine your getting a puppy and you can mold it into what you want. At a pound you are getting a older dog that already has been set in ways and can sometimes be harder to teach. Not that pound animals are bad. Just some prefer a pup so I was showing her the choices. Not everyone wants a show dog so she does not need the best of the best! Plus at a pound I doubt if they do all those tests. It is totally up to the person who wants to buy the dog. I am giving her options and that was all. Sorry it was not to your standards.

When you consider the size and power of a Rottweiler, and the importance of correct temperament, it does not pay to cut corners and buy bargain basement puppies from clueless breeders who are not doing health testing.

A mis bred Rottweiler with an incorrect temperament can be a nuisance at best, and deadly at worst.

If one cannot afford a reasonable price for a well bred pet quality puppy from a responsible breeder who can advise the people on how to properly raise, socialize, train and confine their Rottweiler, then how are they to afford veterinary care, training, food. fencing, supplies, etc.?

Dogs and their upkeep are not free. It is not right to get a puppy and then not be financially able to take care of it.

A Rottweiler in the wrong hands or from the wrong breeder can end up doing a terrific amount of damage, including killing people, if things go really wrong.

Now if you want to continue to advise this person to get a Rottweiler from a 400 dollar newspaper "breeder", then when the accident happens, the blood is on your hands.

get a life you have no right to say that to me! You have to be the NEWEST RUDEST MEMBER HERE! How do you know that the persons dog for $450 is not tested. I just met someone who is selling chi's for $300 and does the testing and totally makes no money actually spends more, but it is her hobby! She does it not for the money, but for the fun of her hobby. You cant judge someone until you talk to them.

If you want blood on your hands then tell her to go to the pound and get a rottie that was abused and beat then when it bites her or someone she can call you!

i have ot agree with red on a few things here. working in the clinic we come across many many rotts who have horrible temperaments. because they are way overbred by people who have no idea what they are doing. there are certain breeds that you really need to do your homework with and the rotts are one of them. not that you cant get a decent dog for a lesser price but your chances of getting a decent one with a stable temperament is less then if you really researched the breeder and paid a little more for one. popularity comes with a price ...... and many breeds have paid for it.


as someone who has done home visits for rescue groups ..... a home visit is not as bad as your father thinks. i am not there to invade your privacy or judge you on how well kept your home is. i am just there to make sure you are what you say you are. that you are not gonna take the rescue dog and fight it, or any of the number of other horrible things people do to animals. thats all ...... just want to make sure this dog has a loving home that he / she deserves.

I did not advise this person to get a Rottweiler from ANYWHERE because of the lack of fencing and the refusal of a home check.

No one in my breed who is doing their homework sells puppies for $450 bucks out of the newspaper.

You might educate yourself a bit as to what responsible breeders do and require before you start spouting off with your diarrhea of the mouth.

I have a love and concern for my breed, and I do not give ANYONE incorrect or bad advice where Rottweilers are concerned.

I stand by everything I have written or said about Rottweilers and responsible breeding and handling practices.

Rottweilers are powerful upstanding territorial dogs who need responsible owners who can socialize, train and CONFINE them properly.

If not properly bred in the beginning, they can be a disaster, even in experienced hands.

You need not think that ANYTHING you write on this board will deter me from educating those considering my breed, nor from offering CORRECT information.

If you want to fence with me about Rottweilers, breeding practices, and responsible ownership, you better come with some better tools than what you have presented so far.

me and my wife have a female rott, who is 5 months now and 50 pounds, prior to this dog we owned an alaskan malamute, but i could already tell our rott needs much more work then any dog we have ever owned.we did losts of reading on the breed before we purchased our rott.
a couple things we have do on a reguler basis is, socialize her, we have done this since we got here her at 8 weeks.
she every other day we take her to play with my mother in laws golden and my moms german sheppard both of which are full grown.we do this mainly because we dont want her showing agression to dogs, on top of this when ever we go anywhere she goes with us, this way she can meet as many new and different people as possible. and all of that has worked because she has had good experiances with people, kids, and other dogs. as far as the fence we have one
but i to have heard of alot of peoples rotts getting stolen.
here is a look at my daily schedule with my rott because she has so much enegry

i wake up at 5:30am i let her out then take her for a walk
6:00am i feed her, then let her out again
6:30am-3.45 work
4:00pm i feed her, let her out then take her for another walk
5:00 me and my wife work on her training basically
sit, stay, come, down, heel, get it(fetch), enough (which is stop)we do this for about 15 minutes to 30 depending on how long we can hold her attention lol
5:30 we play till she wants to lay down
then we make dinner, eat, and play some more with her
or take her to my brothers to play with his kids

this is everyday, everyday we have to work with her, i can see her territorial traits coming out bit by bit as she gets older, that why we are doing everything we can to train her
the best way we can , because rotts have the worst name
and its a shame, my neighbors were skeptical about her
from previous experiances with rotts, and we almost didnt get one because we didnt want to alienate ourselves from our neighbors, but we got chloe anyway and from day 1
i have made my neighbors comfortable with her.almost on a daily basis my neighbors pet her and she loves them.
but it took alot of work to break there mentality of the rotts bad reputation. and im sure it will always be an ongoing process espcially as she gets bigger.
