its that time of year again .......... the time of year when everyone is so busy with the holidays that they realize they dont have any time for their pets anymore and are starting to drop them off to be euthanized. this phenomenon happens twice a year ....... right before the holidays and right at springtime. i just dont get it AT ALL. i am not talking about real sick animals either that need to be put down. just seems the inconvenience factor weighs in heavily at the holiday season. and spring time brings the spring cleaning which means get rid of your pets and start over again with a new one. so lets just get rid of everything !!!!!!!!
and the selfishness just abounds ......... lets just kill our 19 month old golden retreiver because of allergies because that would make SOOOO much more sense then allowing the vet ... who is begging you to let her have your dog ....... to have him. it would be so much better for him to be dead then live his life with someone who actually gives a **** about his life.
then we have the stupid people ........ who buy a husky from a pet store ....... their first dog no less ....... who winds up being euthanized because it bit one of the family members and now they are scared to death of it .... 15 months old ......... and lets just chop its head off too cause it MAY have rabies .... though it is up to date on its vaccine and is never alone outside ...... so the chances are SLIM TO NONE ... that it has rabies but we'll just cut its head off anyway to be sure ........... and then less then a week later we will come back to your office with a NEW PUPPY......... and this time it will be different because it's a CHOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ........... GOD ALMIGHTY !!!!!!!!!!!
and lets not forget the woman who does greyhound rescue ....... who refuses to muzzle her dogs when she lets all of them out in the yard together ......... because muzzling the one greyhound BOARDER will be sufficient ........so all HER greyhounds attack the muzzled greyhound so we have to spend TWO HOURS sewing all the bite wounds. well wouldnt that be enough to teach a normal person a lesson ? NOOOOOOOO ...... we pull the same exact **** a SECOND TIME .......... only this time WE dont have to spend two hours suturing up ANOTHER BOARDER ......... we only have to spend 10 minutes filling out CREMATION FORMS and BAGGING the dog........ because her dogs succeeding in killing that poor animal. AND this stupid **** wants to move to florida and start BREEDING greyhounds for the racetrack !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and what pisses me off to no end is we have to do all this ....... WITH A SMILE !!!!!!!!!!! cause GOD FORBID someone gets told that they are a piece of **** and dont deserve to have an animal much less to take up MY AIR on this planet........... RANT OFF ........
aaarrrggg people suck sometimes!!!!!! too many times!!!!!
can I add one?
the hillbillies that bring their 50+ pound overweight dog in to fit it for a harness and say that it was given to them by some other fool. They tried to breed it but "don't think" it took. I ask how long ago the breeding was - the HB mother says 5 weeks and the HB son says 5 months. When the HB mother asks "how long are they pregnant?" the idiotic HB son says "every woman is pregnant for 9 months stupid" needless to say, they have no idea if the poor overweight purebred english bulldog is pregnant or not but they hope so because they see dollar signs.
I casually mention that they need to get to a vet and have x-rays taken to find out for sure if she is pregnant and that she will most likely need a c-section they look at me like I have 2 heads.
It's sad to say but People never cease to amaze me. They come from all walks of life, from the Hillbilly to High Society. We as animal lovers are going to have to take a stand. Laws need to change to protect the innocent. God gave us dominion over the animals, we are to care for them, not to abuse them.
For me it's just the opposite during the holidays. I almost go broke (not really, but it feels that way) showering my furbabies with gifts and love!
It's sick what people do to animals. What's very sad is how people get pets for Christmas gifts, then after the holiday euphoria wears off and the tiny puppies start chewing on other presents and the like, people give up on their new pets and just abandon them bc it gets too "hard".
Bottom line - people are irresponsible jerks! Where is our "pound" for humans???
I'm so sorry Scout, people are just ignorant! Some people just don't deserve to breath in the same air as the rest of us and our furry babies.
I would be crying if I had to deal with all you've written on here in this post alone, not to mention this happens too often...I am so sorry that the people who do this have no heart for any other living creature on this planet...if I could take away all your pain Scout,I would.
Sounds like you're in the wrong profession, based on this and previous posts, you seem to really hate it. I know that some people do some dumb and selfish things, but I would hate to walk into my vet with a problem that I didn't know how to solve, as I am not a vet or a dog psychologist, and be criticized and labeled by the vet tech, and then be flogged on the internet too.
Heather, scout is only venting. I doubt she went off on these people or the title would read "I am soooo done with people and I got fired today!" She has every right to vent her anger. I would be angry too. She did not name names so I don't see what your problem is. Just because some people are stupid and heartless doesn't mean scout should find another job. If that were the case, scout would be forever unemployed. There are stupid, heartless people in every profession. Scout has helped many people in her job so why quit? Why not try and educate the dumb people? Quitting doesn't make the problem disappear.
Heather,I believe Scout is just frustrated by some of the things that she deals with on a daily basis. She is venting her anger the only way she can....by having to smile, the whole time while dealing with people who are irresponsible with their pets...or kids...or any living being, and not being able to tell them what you think,it's got to be exhausting for her. Scout(vet techs, vets, etc)has to deal with many things, just as techs and doctors at hospitals do.
She is there, because she loves the animals...there's no rule that states she HAS to agree with their "owners" or their ideas, raising of their animals, etc.
I feel for her and others who are in the medical field(I was one of them...on people though).
heather, scout was refering to people dumping off their pets or having them euthanized for the wrong reasons. anyone considering getting a dog, should do prior research on the breed to be sure that it is what they are looking for as far as not just looks, but temperment also. some people tend to buy a certain breed, and then it doesnt conform to what they expect, so the dog is destroyed or ends up in shelters. a pet is a lifetime commitment. i myself have had to rent some sub-standard houses before we bought a place of our own. why ? because alot of places would not rent to us because of harley, our gsd. giving him up was not an option. he is a part of our family. period. euthanizing a pet because they dont fit into the family anymore should never be an option. if there is someone willing to take them and find them a home, then why not ? why would anyone deny their pet a chance to have a life with a family that will want them and love them. shelters also get an onslaught of animals during the christmas holidays. why ? because little jimmy or joannie didnt like the old pet and wants a new one? what happens to all the cute little bunnies that were a childs easter gift and the newness wore off ? when we make the decision to get a pet. it is a LIFETIME COMMITMENT. it should be something that is well researched and well thought out. no pet should ever have to suffer because we didnt take the time to think about the responsibilities BEFOREHAND .
Ok, I get it now. I misunderstood the original post a little. I thought it was about puupies as Christmas presents that are soon unwanted after the holidays. I can be a dumb blonde somtimes! lol
I used to work for a vet in high school (kennel worker/poop scooper/dog walker). One thing I could not believe and appalled me. These really rich jerks brought in this cocker spaniel mix that the husband had actually hit with his car backing out of his driveway (obviously not paying attention). The dog was okay, but had extremely nasty, very large flaky scabs in the area he got hit. It was treatable and would get better over time. You know what the people did? Put him to sleep. I guess because they didn't want the "nastiness" in their house and it was a pain to deal with, because I know they could afford to treat it. The dog died bc the owners didn't want to deal with a mess the husband created in the first place. I think the dog was around 3 years old.
Heather I couldn't help but notice your snotty attitude, yet again.
I honestly don't understand the way your brain functions and the reason as to why this post offended you in the particular way that it did.
Everyone else was offended by the lack of care for the animals in the sad, frustrating examples Scout posted.
On the other hand, you seemed to be more concerned with the person who is getting rid of their "problems" feelings....... including what is said about them on the internet. What the hell?
If these people are uneducated, they need to listen when they are advised not to put a dog down and to sign custody over so that someone who better knows how to take care of the animal can do so. These people are not innocent. They can get educated if they wish, they are lazy and taking an animal to be put to sleep like a dirty little secret is the easy answer and it scares me that it is just that easy for them.
And as for insulting her career choice, I'm sure she joined up for the right reason which would be the animals. If she didn't care for their safety and well being as she does then I would agree as far as challenging the choices she has made. That was a little uncalled for.
Unfortunately there are times when we HAVE to keep our mouths shut and times when we just can't anymore because the &*#$ has got to stop.
Unless you have an inability to feel empathy or compassion for a life that deserves to live more than the better part of society that is walking the streets these days, I suggest you quit while you are ahead.
"I would hate to walk into my vet with a problem that I didn't know how to solve, as I am not a vet or a dog psychologist, and be criticized and labeled by the vet tech, and then be flogged on the internet too."
Heather, whether Scout is a vet tech, the vet, the receptionist, the janitor! I dont think it makes a difference. Do you realize how frustrating it must be for someone like Scout who deals with idiots every single day? And then has to smile at them and act like she is glad to be of service to them? People coming in and saying they need ultrasounds for their 1 yr old dog, people putting down dogs from allergies!, putting dogs to sleep because they are moving. How frustrating would that be?! And all the while, smiling and acting like its no big deal.
After awhile I am sure it gets very frustrating for someone like Scout, who is VERY knowledgable about animals, to see people who do not treat their animals as well as they should/could.
And FYI, Scout loves her job and is great at it. She is not in the wrong profession but gets burnt out I am sure on occasion from dealing with much sadness that comes when dealing with the public.
And maybe some people do not know much about dogs or what is the "best" for their dogs, but that doesnt make it any less heartbreaking for people like Scout...who actually CARE about the dogs there and what happens to them when they leave the office.
I thank God I chose Riley over all the other pups alot... who knows if he had ended up with someone else, he could have been euthanized already because of all his allergy problems. I've spent thousands of dollars that I do not have trying to solve this problem, and I'll continue to do so until it's right and he is comfortable, because I took on that responsiblity, but not all people would....
Sad world. We don't euthanize our kids or drop them off at a shelter. :(
Not only do scout and the people like her deal with the "idiots" while having to be professional, they also are an amazing source of strength for people who are experiencing tremendous grief when losing their pets.
Rufus was my big, handsome male dobe who was the light of my life...I loved that dog more then anything else in this world. He helped me through an abusive marriage and a brutal rape. 3 1/2 years ago I found a lump under Rufus's neck and just knew it was bad. I had lost a doberman 4 years before to lymphoma and in my heart I knew that what it was. "Carla" had known Rufus ever since I had rescued him 6 years earlier with cigarette burns and slashes all over his body. She stood with her arm around me as the vet gave me the news that he did in fact have lymphoma. Over the next 4 months she was with Rufus and I every step of the way while we tried to fight the disease....and then, she is one of the people who gently made me realize that I was keeping him alive for me and not for his quality of life. She came in on her day off and sat on the ground with me, with his head in my lap..and we sent him to heaven together. Afterwards she called be everyday for the next week to see how I was doing. I dont' think I would have made it through some of her days without her support.
And Carla is not a force alone. I find that the techs who take care of our loved ones when they are ill and we are frightened are truly angels among us. They have so much love to give and generally just get mistreated by ignorant clients. So, if scout and others like her need to come on here once in a while and vent their feelings....let them do it...it then allows them to go back and do what they do best....LOVE OUR PETS.
