Hey, I just joined here. Anyway, I want to get a dog and I've done a lot of research, but still I'd love to know what you think. What kind of dog is good for a first time owner(breed)? I'm thinking of a small dog , without much fur.that doesnt need much exersise.Pugs?Mins? Mixes? would not exactly knowing the exact temperament be aproblem for me,with puppies OR adults? Are shelter dogs healthy?
most shelters have all of their pets checked by a vet before they go up for adoption, and some offer health guarentees for 30 days in cases the dog has an underlying problem that is not evident at the time of adoption.
Min Pins are pretty active, but as with all small dogs they can be exercized in a small area, a couple of brisk walks and a good game of fetch should do it.
The problem with mixing 2 breeds is that you really don't know what you are getting, you may get the good or the bad from both breeds, or any mixture there of. Paying a bunch of money for a mutt is no smarter than paying a bunch of money for a purebred, unless you resurch your breeder well. Most, I have honestly never found one, people that crosss breed dog never do health testing on their dogs, so you kever what problems they carry and pass to their pups.
My suggestion to you would be to look at your shelter, you probably wont find a 4 pound min pin, but you may find a 10 pound min oin cross, or something else in that size range.
Another place to look is at breed rescue groups, they place purebreds and crosses that have been pulled from shelters or turned over to them. Usually they have done basic comands, housetraining, temperment testing and spay/neutering, all the hard work and you get to save a life at the same time.
I have 3 chihuahuas and there great no exercise needed they get from walking in the yard no fur great temp. mine anyway. They play together and good with my kids. Was fairly easy to house train so I would say chihuahuas my opinion
A Min Pin was my first dog but they do take a lot of work. Ours are doing great but I spend a lot of time on them. They are smart but very excitable and have a mind of their own. They are wonderful dogs but every book I read says it is not for the first time dog owner. We are very happy with ours. I also think Pugs are great but you should read up on them and their health problems like you should with any dog.
Our best dog when I was young and living with my parents was a mixed breed. My parents picked her out because she was more quiet than the rest at the Humane Society. A lot of times they can tell you the personality of the dogs when you go to look at them from a rescue group or Humane Society.
I like all your choices! lol We raise and show Min Pins and Pugs, and my mom raises and shows Chi's....... So, depending on the dedication, training, and such you are looking for....I can help you with some specifics on any of them.
i have a pug and he is just a doll, if you don't mind snorting and snoring and farts. they are noisy. but he is sweet and cuddly, he is easygoing and a real lap dog. more laid back that a minpin would be i think. if you go to a breeder with healthy dogs they are not too bad healthwise. no problems with mine, except he reacts to his shots so i have to give benadryl before and space them out. i just adore pugs.
