I came across this site as I'm doing research on buying a new pup. This will be my first pup and I'm taking the addition of the responsibility of another life very seriously and want to make sure I do as much research and questioning as I can before making such a commitment. I have found this site a bit useful in exposing some of the dangers of pet shops and puppy mills. It is scary to think of these cute animals being used the way they are. I am looking in local shelters and for local breeders. I would prefer to rescue a dog, but I would like to raise the dog from a pup, and I haven't found much at the local shleters that would suit my needs and desires. I currently live in an aparemtent complex that allows dogs under 30lbs. After much looking around, I have fallen in love with these puggle mutts that are all over the place.

<Soapboxrant>Now I know that this post will get flamed because here comes a new guy with 1 post desiring the trendiest "designer" dog. I've been on a enough message boards to recognize those who have a serious problem with those encroaching on their territory and not liking new members. I only say this because it's littered through every post about these puggles. I like mutts, I know a puggle is not pure bred. I am not planning on showing, breeding, or doinging anything spectacular with my dog. I want an animal to care for and be a friend to and can be a friend for me and my family. I'm a mutt and don't come from many money. To me dogs are about love and companionship, not about ribbons, prancing and hoop jumping. If I offended you, sorry, but i'm only responding to the general mood of these forums.</Soapboxrant>

Let me give some reasoning as to why the puggle. Now all of my information is based on my research. If any other puggle owners out there would like to help me on these facts, please feel free.

First off puggles are about this size dog that I would like. They tend not to be terribly noisy or howlers, and are content to be active and don't mind lazing about a bit. I like Beagles, but they are a bit too big and a bit more active than my wife and I could handle. Pugs are cute, but are a bit to small and the breathing and eye problems tend to push me away. I know these things don't magically disappear when a puggle is breed, but these are not as apparant or such a large concern as with their pug relations. The dogs do shed a bit but I don't mind. They seem to be fun and easy going as well. Plus they are pretty cute.

I want my decision to be educated, I do not want to support a pet shop or puppymill. I would like to help out an abandoned pooch, or support a local breeder who is doing things the right way. What I'm having trouble finding and what this absurdly long post has been leading up to is trying to find a list of reviews of breeders or a list of known puppy mills, so that I can avoid the bad places and check out the good. Now I know that you may say that "reputable breeders don't breed puggles." Fine, enjoy your opinion. What I'm looking for someone who is breeding puggles for the love of the dog, not the love of the wallet. I live in PA and am hoping for something local as I would prefer not to ship a puppy anywhere. I have found the End o'Lane Kennels in York County, PA. They seem to be good but I can't find any opinions on them other than what they have on their site.

Any help would be appreicated. I know I didn't put out the most welcoming of first posts on here, but what I want is information, not people bashing me with thier opinions about purebreds, mutts, the latest fad, or their own personal baggage. I want to love a dog that has been breed and raised properly. Thanks.

They breed multiple random breeds and mixed breed puppies of the resulting possible crosses, and point out that they are in the middle of Amish country, which is known for being puppymillers.

You say you don't want a howler? There is no way to tell what characteristics a mixed breed pux beagle cross will have. You could get all great traits, all the lousy ones that lead to medical problems or a mixture of both, including a dog that is a nightmare to potty train along with howling.

Beagles bark and howl. A puggle would be half beagle so write down the words howler and not a howler on a piece of paper.
Now close your eyes, spin around, and try to hit the paper on one of those options.

Nothing wrong with mixed breeds, that is just the odds you get dealt.

I know someone who has one - and for them it is a perfect fit for their family. They found him as an older puppy thru a rescue.

Thanks, I know that the howling or not howling is a bit of a crap shoot. If i get a howler, i'll be fine with it, I'll take the 50% odd of not having one over having a beagle who will dfinately be a howler :)

One of my friends got the puggle for all the same reasons and has a howling active dog who passes out when it gets to active. It also has a disc problem it is on constant meds for. the problem is you will never fidn a well bred one. Two badly bred dogs thrown together will make another badly bred dog.

i have a 2 year old beagle that i saved when she was just 6 months old,i was to worried that she would howl,,but she dont,,she is my lap dog and she loves blankets....perfect dog for a family,,,goode luck

every puggle i have seen advertised has been from a breeder who also mixes quite a few other breeds or has a pet shop that they sell them in. the only time i have heard of one breeding them privately in a home is from someone on here who got her dog from a woman who couldnt even GIVE them away for free. you should speak to acey sometime and ask her what life is like with a puggle.

you live in the puppymill capital of the east coast. only place i have heard of in pennsylvania selling these mutts is some hole in the wall place called jacks dog farm or something to that effect. all my opinions aside ... just the title of that place should clue the average intelligent person what types of places breed these dogs.

i will just not get it no matter how many times some one says it. there are a lot of breeds that have things about them that i don't like. the last thing in the world i would think is that getting a mix of any of those breeds would give me some magical dog that all of a sudden is totally unlike either of the breeds i do not like.

lets say i dislike things about chows ... and lets say i dislike things about neopolitan mastiffs ..... now why on earth would i think that getting a chow neo mix would be great ? i just do not get the logic behind it at all.

whosgeo......I forgot to add that we cannot give out specific breeders, websites for breeders and such here. All we can do is give the best information we can so that you know what to look for/ask, and make an informed decision in whatever you decide to do.....good luck!

I disagree with Isolde...puppyfind has very few reputable, ethical breeders listing their dogs there (there are exceptions of course, but they are in the minority). And yes, I realize reputable/ethical and mixed breed breeders is an oxymoron, but my point is that puppyfind is by no means the best place to look for a dog.

thank you all for your help. I do understand that this dog isnt a magical breed that fixes all problems. Is there really a breed that is fits 100% of your desires and needs 100% of the time within every dog of that breed? The most gentle dog i ever knew was a doberman. I know beagles that have attacked their owners after 11 years. I know there's no magic combination here and i may endup with all of the frustrating aspects of a pug and a beagle. Reagardless, it'll still be my pup.

Thanks for the tidbit that you cannot put specific info on specific breeders on this forum, that helps alot in getting my questions answered.

Geographicaly, I'm in a terrible spot to try to get a humanly bred dog of any breed or mix. I would really like to avoid shipping a dog if possible, or buying one sight unseen because I want to see the puppy before I get it. Any help for me in Southeast, PA would be a help. Puggle or not, I want a pup to call my own.

Well, I am not too far from you being in Ohio. We show Pugs and a Beagle, but even if I knew of someone mixing them, I couldnt in good conscience give you the info since really....reputable breeder of mixes is an oxymoron.

People who breed random mixed breeds are usually puppy millers. I've had a Beagle before, and they are noisy. My friend has a Shetland Sheepdog. Anything mixed with a Beagle will howl! My friend got her Shetland Sheepdog from a puppy mill. Let me tell you something; this dog is a fear biter, snaps when irritated, is an excessive, endless barker, steals food, is timid, scared to death of everything, and is so touch shy. I use to have a Beagle, Jake, that I rescued from the pound. He would roam whenever given the chance, bayed and howled, soiled the house, was stubborn, and stole food. I've never seen someone selling puggles that didn't have a bunch of other breeds of mixes for sale. Honestly, you're gonna to end up with a problem on your hands if you get a puggle. I must disagree with Crestiemom, I've seen many good breeders on puppyfind. There are tons of champion sired and champion lined pups. I hope I could help.

unless you want to spend most of your time weeding out all the scammers, i would steer clear of puppyfind. there are some honest breeders that sell through that site, but as of lately, the scammers ( usually nigerian or cameroon) have been running rampant. i have had my frenchies pics stolen from their dogster pages on three different occasions and put for sale on puppyfind. it took alot emails to admin and a couple of weeks to get them removed. i have read several posts on different forums of people that have been taken for their money from so called breeders they found on that site.

Also, when you see Champion background, or Champion sired puppies being advertised on puppyfind, it is also in general someone who will only take payments through Western Union....big red flag. Never send money that way for a pup....as an added tip.

i have a beagle/basset and the only time he barks is when a dog or person comes to the fence or the door.
where i got him they have 4 beagle/basset and the only time they bark and howl is when they are rabbit hunting.

my dog bo is one of a kind though.
he is 50 lbs long body like the basset short legs from the basset and a little head and ears like the beagle.

now this is what makes him one of a kind.
if he thinks someone is going to hurt me he will defend me....

I advertise my Champion sired puppies on puppyfind, and they actually are Champion sired, but mine are not $200 with shipping like the scammers claim. If it is too good to be true, it normally is.

I think it is a very 'high traffic' website that leads them to my website, and that is what I really want. TP, puppyfind, pupcity, where ever they are all tools to find a breeder, but after that families need to check out the breeder individually.

I know there are a few reputable european breeders that advertise on that site, but to me it is barely worth it to chance the scammers. If you send your $$ out of the country there is basically no recourse if they take your money. Their country will tell you 'sorry'.

Also for puppyfind, steer clear or at least be VERY selective in the puppymills States, OK, MO, and PA. Also, the reviews mean very little on puppyfind. Breeders have the option of deleting the negative ones and can have friends leave positive ones. Instead ask for real breeder references.

honestly ? yes. it took awhile and some research and then waiting until the time was right and i have now a breed i have fallen head over heels for. a breed that does indeed fit everything i want in a dog. i am not saying you have to or should get a purebred but that is one of the advantages of them. breed traits and looks, etc. are all pretty much predictable. of course there are variants between individual dogs because not every dog was raised in the same environment. but when you read about a specific breed you can pretty much guarantee the majority are exactly how they are described.

i have owned more mixes in my adult life then i have purebred dogs so i am not pushing purebreds either. but with each mix i have had it truly has been the luck of the draw. the mix breed i have now is pretty much an even split personality wise from the two breeds we believe he is mixed with. two breeds i would never get as pure and he has solidified that belief for me. i love him to death but he proves my point when i say if you dont like some qualities of specific breeds ...... mixing them is not going to make it a better fit.
