So sorry for your loss! Beagles are notorious for following their noses and disappearing in the blink of an eye. We have one, she has escaped before...and its quite a chore getting her to give up her freedom.
We have many that love to rush the door as well anytime someone comes through. What we generally do it anytime we know we need to come in with groceries, baby, etc. We have a baby gate (xtra tall) that we place in the doorway so we can carry in what we need and pull the door closed. Keeps the dogs away from the door while we get in.
This wont bring the dog back, but an idea for when you heal and possibly decide to add another dog to your family :)
stdogz, I am so sorry for your loss. I have a Cavalier and when I open door she tries to run out. No matter how careful we are she has managed to get out a few times.
As for Basset and Houndz just consider them alot of hot air and let it go. Maybe someday they will lose a pet and we can give them the support they have given you. Again I know how bad you are hurting. I have been there.
i am sorry for you hun and i know how u feel,it happend to me b4..

Just to let you all know a coyote can and will attack in the day time just as easy as night. Their was a rabbit hunter around here that was out with a group of hunters and they had about 15 beagles. It was about 10:00 am. and a coyote jumped one of their dogs. It cut him wide open. I dont think i should post a pic. Its hard to look at. Thats why i put bells on my beagles so i can tell where they are. ( beagles dont always bark. Sorry to hear about your dog and for the harsh comments on here. ( if words could kill we would all be dead )
I am so terribly sorry. I mean, I can't even think of anything to say here. I've had a pretty emotional pet day myself so when I read your post, I just cried.
We would all love to blow smoke up eachother's behinds and claim that we all have perfect pets that don't run away or get loose or have hang ups that don't have the easiest of solutions, but the simple fact is that life happens, and sometimes there's just nothing that you can do to prevent it from doing that...no matter how hard you try.
Please, don't beat yourself up over this. I know it's hard to do, and maybe sometimes I should take my own advice, heh, but please make sure that you don't let yourself get dragged down by just a couple people and their posts.
we have coyotes here. i can hear them in the woods. more than a few times they have been close and have even come up to the back fence. cats disappear. i keep both my cats indoors, and go out with my dogs to potty, even though our yard is fully fenced. soooooo sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved baby. i would be devasted if it were any of mine. if my dogs ever got out back into the woods at night, i would never see them its pitch black out there. so sorry about your baby. i wish i could say something that would make you feel better. hope you stick around, some of us will miss you if you go, at least i know i will.
Both of my dogs are Beagle mixes... my oldest definitely has more "Beagle" in him. I can't tell you the number of times that he has gotten out and I have found myself chasing him. I'm a very responsible pet owner, I have a fenced in back yard and I am very careful because I know he runs (and despite many, many hours of training - he is still not reliable). He has gotten out when I opened the door to get pizza from the delivery man, he has gotten out when I ran out to pick my son up when he fell out of a tree.... and with my dog - there is no catching him... you tail him until he's ready to be caught. If I had a dime for every time that my neighbors have seen me barefooted in my pajamas running down the street with husband and son trailing screaming, "Here Quincy - here boy"... I'd be rich!
My point? Accidents happen! If I remember Bagel was having a hard time being trained... at one point Stdogs thought that they might have to have Bagel put down - but they had a behaviorist come in and work with him and things had gotten better. She loved that dog a lot.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a pet - but especially hard that way.
Machinest - I'm sorry for your loss as well... that poor, poor baby.
Rainbow bridge became a little brighter today with the addition of two new beagles... I'll keep you in my prayers.
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how sneeky dogs can be. My mom brought over a jack I named him fred. Anyway I went out to take my daughter to a Drs appt as soon as I opened the door he bolted i reached to grab his colar and There was nothing there I grabed some fur and he was off. hs collar was found in the back yard a few days later.
I dought you could have stoped it from happening, things happen that are out of our controll. I am honestly very very sorry for your loss.

Though its...Come here Stevie...Come...(insert whistles, kissy noises) ....heres a treat...come,.....please come here....Steeeeevie!!!! lol.

sorry i read the whole thread, some people can be kind of harsh out there,i had my two rotties take off together, just walking down the sidewalk together,i had no clue, untill i saw 3 or 4 cop cars in front of the house, they were just sitting in the back of one of the cars,it was like they just robbed a back or something.dogs take off, they bark, sometimes they play deaf.no one has a perfect dog.
