If you contact your town clerk, they should be able to give you the details.
At least for our town, they want you to license your dog in case it is ever picked up by animal control or whatnot so the dog can be located. Around here they dont have the microchip scanner.... though I dont have mine chipped either way.
It's more if your dog is altered or not, and you must provide a proof of rabies and (if applies) a spay/neuter certificate.
You can also see if your town only allows a certain amount of dogs... most places it's not up to the vets office to provide tags, but I'm not sure how it is in your area.
thanks for all the info=- greatly apprecaited. As i mentioned when i was at my vets office last week ( banfeild at petsmart) there was a guy buying licenses for his pits and you can get them there but cash or check and made out to the county i thought i heard. So why dont the vet tell you that you have to register your dog? Bentley is a year old and does hae his rabbi shot and does have his rabbie tag on his collar.
I wouldnt of know if i didnt over hear this while i was waiting for the vet to come in to the exam room.
so really what is registering all about? just a way for the county to make money? is that really just it? some one mentioned if they were ever picked up by a dog pound, then these tags will let them know where and who he belongs to? Do they give you the tag right there? Is it just like a rabie tag? just has numbers on it? no name or anything? or does this license have their name and address on it? or a number that is linked to all that info?
Bentley is all up to date with all shots and is also neutered so i guess i should find out abuot getting a license. I did over hear that this guy had to show proof of all vaccines and rabbie vaccine before they would issue him a tag- i dont know if he got the tag then or if they send them to him? i just dont know why tho that the vet wouldnt tell me its time to register bentley? how are we suppose to know this stuff if weve never had a dog before? and i would of never even know about this if i didnt over hear the conversation over the tags.
also when you get this license do the they still have to wear their rabbie tag also? or does the register tag work for everything and show hes had all shots and is up to date. So it isnt differnt breeds pay more? and every year this will have to be redone? i will find out about the life time tag or the 3 year i thnk that they did offer him 1 year or 3 he went with the 1
thanks for all the help- guess when daisy goes back to the vet in a few days i will talk to them about the license and im going to ask them why they dont tell you about it? I feel they should-
I don't know about elsewhere but in my county and municipality there are several reasons for licensing dogs the way they do. The license tag is numbered and shows the name of the township the dog is licensed with. If your dog gets loose and is picked up by animal control they call the township clerk to look up who owns the dog with that numbered tag so you can be contacted. If your dog is involved in an accident or causes damage it gives the police a way to contact the person responsible, usually the dog's owner, so restitution can be made and possibly charges can be brought against the owner. The municipality doesn't issue a license without proof of rabies vaccination as a way of protecting the municipality from liability in case of a rabies outbreak. Since there are fines for having an unlicensed dog over the age of 6 months it is the town's way of forcing people to do the responsible thing and vaccinate against rabies before you can get a dog licensed as well as be accountable for their dog and its actions. I don't know how many times I've been charged at by an unfamiliar dog running loose that was wearing no identification. If I had been bitten by one I would have had to go through a series of rabies shots as a precaution because without the license the dog may not have been vaccinated and could be carrying rabies. You can't "wait and see" if symptoms show up - by the time you have symptoms of rabies it is fatal. There would also be doctor bills and I would have no way of knowing who to file a complaint against to get those bills paid. Law enforcement would have to lock up the dog for observation and if no owner comes forward the dog would be destroyed. It is better to license your dogs.
wow lots of helpful info. so bentley is just over a year and should have a license. Yes he does have all shots including rabies . do they still wear their rabbie tag also? or will the new license be all he needs? Right now he does wear his rabbie tag on his collar at all times. oh and he is neutered-
ok now daisy is 21 weeks old- she hasnt had rabbie shot yet due to her being sick and her vaccines have been pused back- but when she goes in to the vet next week , i think she is getting her rabbie shot then, but she isnt spayed but will be when she is well enough to do so- so should i wait till she is spayed? i read that its more for a unaltered dog then a altered dog- but with in a month she will be spayed. The vet wanted to do it this week but with deworming and not knowing what is going on with her and this diarhea shes had since i bought her the end of october, and going threw coccida and now what ever it is-
I will get bentleys tag when im there. do they give it to you on the spot? or do they mail it to you? so its kinda like a rabbie tag? just has a number on it and the vets office that gave it and who ever can call and that number brings up his info on his rabbie shot and what ever else? do they only need 1 rabbie shot their hole life? or is it every so many years?
I dont know our township rules here in my area on when they should have their license. who fines you if your dog dont have a license? what if you dont go to dog parks and out of your property ? do they still need a tag? i know silly question but i assume they dont go door to door asking if your dog has a tag. i thought the vets office did notify the correct township or what ever to let them know bentleys had his rabbie shot- guess i thought that was the license tag- wrong.. thanks again... theresa
In our county - you are fined by animal control for having an unlicensed dog. the money is used for animals in the shelter.
you do not need to have the rabies tag on them if you have the ac tag issued by the county. proof of rabies is needed so they feel there is no need for both to be worn at all times.
if I take my dogs off property the have to be leashed. I keep the county tags on them 24/7 as well as an id tag.
when I get the actual tag depends on how/when I pay. if done at a rabies clinic I get the tag then and there. If I go through the vet for rabies I get the tag in the mail in about a month.
we are also required to keep the receipt sent to us by AC with us. I just keep it in the glove compartment with my truck reg and ins. If pulled over with dogs in the vehical the police want proof the tag is up to date. they would rather look at a written receipt than to handle an unfamiliar dog. hehehe I don't blame them.
be sure to check your county's regulations, every county and state has different laws.
--------- as for the spay, I would wait to get the tag till after. no use wasting money and paperwork. if you are concerned you can always ask them when you get your other dog tagged.
