I always hear about people saying how Pugs can never breathe.
I've never met a single Pug that didn't run circles around it's family members for hours on end. Mine never died; he ran and played, stopped to get water as any other dog does, and was right back to playing. He got horrible zoomies right after baths (of course outside) and they could go on for up to two hours. His breeder tested the parents; he was never tested because we had no intentions of breeding him.
Luckily, there are responsible ethical breeders trying to fix these 'problems' who are not resorting to turning their backs to the breed's national clubs and mixing it with a breed that has absolutely nothing in common with it and absolutely nothing to contribute to it, or any new breed that would respectfully come of it.
Dogs cannot sin; that is a privilege exclusively for humans.
i got curious, and looked up other small breeds. dandie dinmont terriers have zero with excellent also; as do the japanese chin. a dandie was very high in westminster this year. cairn terriers only have 2, maltese only 2. several other of the few i checked only have a few rated excellent. so, i believe smaller dogs are not xrayed for hips as often. you can't single out only pugs. gazillions have patellas as the top rating. i have a healthy purebred pug. gotta get the whole picture, ali.

I am thinking about having B tested when hes old enough just to see. You know just because there are none listed does not mean that some people have the testing done but dont regester it after.
No one is trying to mix you with a fliping chimp to make you smarter so what gives you the right to mix breeds thinking it will make them better?
Lets say puggles do take off and turn into a real breed. Good for them but its not going to whipe out the pug, its not doing anything for pugs, and it sure wont do anything for a beagle.
Poor guys do you have any clue what your beagles are thinking when you have them breed. My bet is they are cursing you for locking them up with a buggy, cross eyes freak with no face, and think of the pugs. You know they are thinking, why am I being locked up with this hill billy with a nose thats bigger then my butt. They are cursing you and humping just to get it over with.
If you want to breed puggles then your gonna do it no matter what anyone says. But if your gonna do it you can at least try to better the breed and make it its own. All your doing right now is breeding mutts with a dumb name. People spent years working on breeds to get what we have today, they didnt just toss 2 random dogs in a pen let them go at it then give the offspring a dumb uncreative name. My brothers weiner snitchel crack was more creative then puggle.
Im tired its late im going to bed. Thank you scout for the info you posted, I knew not to let B eat to much but I didnt know you should switch to dog food so soon. All the breeders I have talked to that breed dogs knowen for hip problems said they should be given puppy food longer. I will look into the food a bit more tomarow and maby even start putting B on dog food.
I love all you guys Good nigh
I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name
I'm a way layperson at this (having arranged to have all our dogs spayed & neutered for the past almost 40 years) but what I don't understand is that if you, Alicat1, love Pugs & are trying to create a "better" Pug (by mixing it with a Beagle????), why don't you do the obvious, i.e., purchase the very best (hip rated) female Pug you can find available for sale in the country (world?) & mate it with the very best (hip rated) male Pug you can find available for stud in the country (world?)? It may take a few generations of pups but it seems to me you'd have a great chance of eventually improving the breed's hips tremendously & might even proudly be the first one to register one with "excellent" rated hips. If you can't improve on the vast array of already existing breeds, why breed at all? It HAS to be the money - :-(
Monkeyeatbutt (jeez, I hate that screen name, sorry, I'm an old fogy): Regarding your observation, "No one is trying to mix you with a flipping chimp to make you smarter so what gives you the right to mix breeds thinking it will make them better?" Pure poetry little missy; I love it! -- :-)
I can't speak to how healthy the Beagle male or Pug female were in the case of our Puggle, especially since he was a sort of rescue, but we have had him tested and checked by our vet and he seems to think we have an excellent cross. Good hips, head, etc. I guess time will tell he is really young. I do know if you look into genetics, no matter how good the stock is your still looking at the prospect of a recessive gene popping up and as far as I know they can't really predict it with 100% accuracy. I see I came into this discussion late, but thought I would add my 2 cents for what its worth.
I can strive for excellence, I leave perfection to God
Monkeyisabutt- you are definitely the one that must have been crossed with a family member. You give stay at home moms a bad name. Where is your degree from? Oh wait-- the non-existant place that your pugs parent's hip xrays come from.
All these people who have had 'past pugs' with hip tested parents-- break out the numbers. That is the beauty of OFA, if they were done they would be on FOREVER, but it is obvious they weren't.
I really truly don't care if anyone agrees with raising puggles or not. I just don't see how they can be any LESS healthy than pugs.
I am entitled to my opinion, just as everyone else. People get so mean and nasty on here when some one disagrees. It's like some of you are INCAPABLE of having a debate, or discussion where someone DISAGREES with you.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
Sorry if you dont like my name, Its kind an inside joke between my brother and I that went a bit to far.
Poor ali cant come up with anything better then to say my family inbreeds and that i give stay at homes moms a bad name. If your going to try to hurt someones feelings you need to work a little harder then that.
Hun I didnt even finish highschool, so of corse i dont have a degree. A degree does not prove how smart you are, all it says is you went to school.
Ali im sure you have a degree so what has that gotten you? You seem to think you and others are so much better then I am because of a piece of paper. So what has that piece of paper gotten you?
Has it gotten you a good job were you make millions a year? I dought it (my uncle does he didnt finish highschool). has it gotten youa great family? No a degree has nothing to do with that. has it given you any spuuer powers? No thats not right Im sure that only glowing rocks and green goo can give you that. has it made you any friends? I dought it and if it has im sorry but your friends suck. Right now I can go get a job making $100 a hour, and not working a corner think you, a degree cat get you that job.
So what makes your paper so specal that you feel you can hang it over my head? It may look nice in a frame, it would probly make a good target, if you run out of TP you always have that avable to use.
if your gonna try to bring me down your gonna have to do alot better then that.
I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name

Still fairly new here but just wondering what peoples home life has to do with her breeding philosphy? Oh let me guess "she started it" grow up people. So some dont agree with how she breeds her dogs,so it gives everybody else the right to say their cash cows? Right, wrong, who cares as long as she is looking for help all the power to her.We can all be adults here right,so it is not help why criticize?
Alicat, the tactics you use to try to prove what you are doing is right are just laughable. It is a very obvious fact that you come on here for no other reason than to start arguments. You didn't start this topic because you genuinely care about pugs hips. You just thought you would try to make everyone else look stupid, guess what...you failed. With every one of your posts you just prove and show your ignorance a little bit more.
If you are so worried about pugs having bad hips, then why do you chose to breed them instead of choosing a breed with excellent hips to make your mutts? Oh, of course, it's because you really don't care and since "puggles" are the "in thing" right now. Well, hey, whatever brings in more money for you right? That's your motto.
Whatever. I don't understand why you are even still on this forum. You are nothing but a joke to everyone(with any common sense) on here. Could you please go and join the "I breed mutts and I'm proud" forum. Or would you rather keep making a fool of yourself on here?
DO NOT bother replying back to me Alicat. This was my first and last post to you.
So some dont agree with how she breeds her dogs,so it gives everybody else the right to say their cash cows?
humpty you are new here, so let me clue you in. alicat herself, stated that she breeds her dogs to provide for her and her family. this is not something that is being made up for entertainment value. she quit her job as a social worker so she could stay at home and let her dogs do the earning.
so the term cash cow is fitting as that is exactly what her dogs are to her.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
