What do you think??!
Do you think that Pit Bulls are natrually mean or do you think that someone has to abuse them for them to become mean? My opinion is that most of them are just natrually mean, that its their nature..but thats just me! what do you think?

I work at a grooming salon doing baths, and I'd much rather bathe a pit bull than a lab, chi, or many small dogs.

Ive met many great tempered Pit Bulls ,they were better behaving than my jack russell sittin on my lap right now.

I have never in my entire 51 years, ever come accross a mean pitbull. I have been bitten by a poodle and a chihuahua though. There are many breeds that can be more prone to bite than pitbulls, its just that they dont make the headlines.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

I believe that a pitbull is not naturally mean it's the people around and in their environment.

Pits are not "naturally" mean. They have a higher temperment test then A LOT of breeds, 89. something I beleive. If you read up about the history of them they were originally bred for fighting and carry certian genes that, in time, are bred out.

Plus, it ALL has to do with the owner and how the owner handles/raises/cares for the dog. If he trains him to gaurd he will be mean, if they throw them out in the yard and abuse them, they will be mean, but if they are kind, loving, and gentle just like you would be with any other breed, the likely hood of them coming out nice and VERY GOOD. Get what i'm saying? It has alot to do with NATURE VS. NURTURE.

People see Pits and automatically think killers and thats not true. Just because of their history the pits are "classified" as that. But you sure dont hear about other dogs attacking humans and other pets because thats not as "interesting" and "will not get the publics attention". Its all for the public and all they want to do is sell their papers and no one would buy them without stories like those.

I have been bit by MANY dogs in my lifetime, Pomeranians, Jack Russell Terriers, Snouzers*, even LABS, but NEVER have I been bitten by my Pit Bull. Nor has he ever TRIED to bite me. He knows that without me he would have nothing so he will do EVERYTHING in his power to not upset me/harm me.

I have A LOT more to say on this post but I wont. I hope my point got across though.

Are humans born as drug dealers? No!
Are humans born as murders? No!
Are humans born as sex offenders? No!
Are APBT born aggresive? NO!

Nothing is born evil or mean...They are trained to be like this. I have owned 4 pits and have NEVER been bit by one or had one attack another animal. I have been bit by min pins, labs, poodles and westies...Its almost like saying all black people are bad. Not true!

Here are some ATTS Temperament Test results. Its based on stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness as well as the dog's instinct for protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat.

This dosnt mean ALL dogs...but the magority of them. Are you going to find an aggresive Pit bull? Of corse, just like you will find an aggresive lab. But because of the bully breeds bad name they get more media when they do bite...its just not fair.

Pit bulls are one of the only dogs specifically breed not to be human aggressive which makes them a good fighting dog(not for it) strength and loyalty. The trainer can be in the ring with there dog during the fight.

Sorry folks, but here it is.

Some pit bulls are born "mean". Which, I guess, is agressive towards people and animals. This is true of many types of mammals--it's just a fact of life. Some pits are bred to be mean, some people think it's called "game."

Now, most I've seen are just loveable. They'll lick you to death and they adore being petted. Properly trained and socialized, they make wonderful pets, great obedience/agility dogs and wonderful working dogs.

As for humans--some seem to be born "mean." All the socialization and training in the world. All the love in the world and they turn out to be aggressive, nasty-tempered, even homicidal. It seems to "just happen."

More are "made", of course. Traumatic, abusive upbringing; military service; torture; and pure bad luck can turn people "mean". By which I think you are talking about various types of mental illness.

This is not a cut-and-dried issue.

As for pit bulls, I don't think they are any more prone to "meanness" than any other pure bred dog (unless bred for fighting). And I have found that responsible breeders are cognizant of the reputation this breed has and have bent over backwards to produce even-tempered dogs.

I wish more pure-bred owners and breeders of other types of dog breeds were as responsible.

I will agree that some animals are born "mean", that is aggressive toward humans. But no more pit bulls than any other breed, by any means.

Game bred pit bulls, if the breeder has been breeding selectively and properly, are actually likely to be the most human friendly of all, believe it or not. In dog fighting, human aggression was totally unacceptable. Dogs had to be handled in the midst of a fight. If a dog bit a human, it was culled-- either removed from the breeding program, or killed.

They don't have to be trained to fight. Dog aggression is a common trait in the breed, also from years of selective breeding. Now they might get strength training to keep them in good shape, but the instinct to fight is a natural one, not a learned behavior.I have certainly never ever encouraged my dog to fight, in fact strongly discouraged it, but if another male walks up to him he will immediately want to fight. And he WILL if I don't either pick him up and get him somewhere away from the dog or someone doesn't get the other dog away. However, he loves all people. He loves strangers and friends and repair men. He is no guard dog, let me tell you!

Hmmmmmmm, very controversial topic. Personally, I would rather a Pit Bull over a Chihuahua or Poodle, anyday. Their temperment is more stable, Pits are very people oriented.

What Pit Bulls have you had contact with that are so "naturally mean"? Have you owned a Pit Bull?

Shiny, what do you think that drive to attack other males would be like if the Pit puppy was raised with a bunch of other dogs? Do you have 1 dog, and got him as a pup? Just wondering , because my dogs are , or can be very animal aggressive, and I want an APBT.

Pen, he was raised with 4 other dogs until age 2, when my friend gave him to me. I had another dog at the time, Missy. He got along well with all the dogs at his former home and well with Missy. Missy died of a brain tumor, and I adopted a male named Bosco. God I loved that dog. But he and Manson got along for maybe 3 days, after that, they wanted to KILL each other. Not only if they were near to each other, but they were consumed with getting at each other, chewing holes in doors, etc. Ended up with a horrific fight that landed Manson in the hospital for 3 days, multiple stitches and drains. When he came home he couldn't walk still, but he would crawl over to the closed door of the room Bosco was in and whine and growl. Since then, he wants to fight most males. Not as severely as he wanted to fight Bosco, but enough that I have to be EXTRA CAREFUL. Right now I have 2 dogs, as my friend moved out and just left Jackal here, he is a pit bull too. I keep them separated at all times and they don't pay each other any attention. But if they were out together, it would be ugly fast.

Are you already having to separate certain ones of your dogs because of fighting?

It's so hard to tell.. some people have pit bulls that do just fine with other dogs. But there is a higher risk of animal aggression in this breed. If you want to get a pit bull, it might help to get an adult that you already know is good with other dogs.

Yes, I have 1 stud who seems to want to kill 2 of his sons. I have worked out a system, that works quite well, while keeping them in close proximity, one is in an x pen, and there is no jumping or trying to get out, by the stud.I also have my dogs crate trained and Diesel (the stud) happens to love his.One day I had Butch (one of the despised sons)in my room, and Diesel was running around in the kitchen. When he heard the scratching at the door, he looked at me, and bolted for his crate! I thought it was hilarious. It's almost as if he has to prove he's still dominant, but does'nt want to get his butt kicked, it was really strange. Since then, he's done it again, and just knows that when Butch is out, he's in. The other boy that likes to fight with him is with my son, as he is his favourite dog anyway. I think I should get a puppy, simply because of Diesel's attitude with other adult males. I think that if I brought an adult male Pitty in here, Diesel would end up as a tasty snack. Anyway, I'm still trying the leash thing with Butch and Diesel in the same room, and it slowly seems to be working, but I still hav'nt let them out together, yet. One day, one of my sons accidentally let Diesel out for a pee, because he had been sleeping with him, and did'nt realize that I was up and sitting at the table with Butch on my knee.
Diesel saw him, and stiffened up right away, and beat it for the doggy door. Butch just sat on my knee, and ignored him. When Diesel came in, he ran straight for his crate, and opened the door himself!
So yes, I'm certainly thinking hard about the addition, but I still think if I get the APBT as a young pup, Diesel will be o.k. with him, maybe I'm wrong.

There is only one breed who I believe is "naturally" mean, the Fila Brasierlo. but it is what they were rbed to do. APBTs were NEVER intended to be aggressive towords people.
Of course there's no "I" in team... but hey look! There is an "I" in pie :)

I too believe that APB are great dogs. The ones I know are loving, will lick you to death if they can and love kids.

I do believe that ANY dog can be taught to attack and kill. Why someone would do that is beyond me, but born that way, NO I don't believe that IMO

I have worked for our Humane Society and voluenteered at the local dog pound. Most of the pits that came in were great dogs, along with most of the Rotts. The pound even had some fighting pits they had confiscated and, although dog agressive, were people friendly. Most of the "mean dogs" and bitters were mixed breeds.

I think pitbulls have a propencity (spell) to be mean if the environment and training brings this out in them.
If you look at your history, the pitbull was created to fit bears, bulls, boars in a pit. Thus the name pittbull.
But I think with the proper handling, training and a sharp eye for any triggers. A pittbull can be a very kind and gentle dog.
I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.
