I must say it is way harder then one would think. I myself do not breed but my fiance does and has for 8 years. However I was left to care for a pregnant dog and she had her pups 3 days ago. I thought to myself at first when my fiance had to leave "I got this" I researched high and low on the internet and thought I was prepared but then every little thing that I didnt think to research like discharge and other things were popping up at me left and right. I turned here to the forum with alot of questions (probably dumb ones) I was not at all prepared even though I have lived with my fiance for 7 years and seen him do it plenty of times there is so much "behind the scenes" type stuff that goes on I never imagined. I have currently racked up vet bills up the wazoo for normal things because I am not experienced but yet have researched and been right there for 7 years of breeding. It is alot more than one would think is all I am saying. One more thing is that NO ONE on tp that gave me advice steered me wrong everyone here was helpfull and pretty much by the time I got to the vet I was told what I had already learned on TP. So do take the advice on this forum in to consideration.
There are many members of Terrific Pets website with countless years of experience in breeding, whelping, raising, training, showing and loving their dogs. The knowledge that can be learned, with a little listening and an open mind is invaluable.
The people here, offering advice are not doing so maliciously. They are sincere in sharing their wisdom.
Those that heed the advice, will be richer for it.
I will now step off the soapbox.
You can't stay young forever. You can, however, remain immature, always.
ilovemyshihtzus, I am a breeder of many years, and I know how horribly wrong things can go. The reason I asked you how you knew there are only 3 puppies, was to see if you had this confirmed by the vet. You cannot tell by the kicks how many pups your dog is expecting, sometimes they are way up high, 'hiding'. My advice to you is to find out how many pups this dog has, because if she really does only have 3, they could be whoppers, and a section will be needed. I am doubting that scenario, just because of the number of breedings you did, but at least the first 3 were likely sperm producing, the next 3 are debatable. Do you have every thing else ready for this whelp?
Wow! So much for just asking a question, huh? Well I adopeted 2 shih tzus. I puchased the 1st at a petstore (on a whim) and because we loved her so much bought another about a year later (boy). Only AFTER did we learn about puppy mills and the need for adopting dogs from shelters. (There are NONE within 50 miles from us) so after learning all this we have lived with. Guilt for a long time. My bitch did get pregnant and had 1 pup. None was intentional...she was not able to get spayed when she needed to.. because of health issues...we NEVER wanted her to get pregnant because of all the things we learned. She was on medication and I really belive she almost died giving birth. She bled so much.. growing up we let our labs breed a couple times and always gave them to happy families..I see now its not a good thing, actually...please do not reply with how stupid this was... I am well aware. Really I just wanted to "stick up" for you after reading all the harsh comments posted after your questions... atleast you asked.. sounds like you just didn't know wshat you were doing. I think its pathetic when someone like you asks a question on here and others reply with nasty comments and treat you like your crule. The truth is they really feel better bitching at others about something that they have an opinion on... good for them to care about this subject.. but sounds like none of them know how to educate others...just put you down...mean while they didn't know any better than you at some point or another...anyway I'm happy to hear it all worked out :) and I hope you don't plan.on doing it. Again haha....congrats on the puppies I'm sure. They're cutie pies!
I have a pregnant shih tzu and I am scared for my little girl. I have never had a dog get pregnant and I am researching the internet for information to help me. I hope I can stay calm for her and any advice would be greatly appreciated. My male shih tzu somehow got her panties off and next thing I knew, they were stuck:( I wasn't ready for this but it is going to happen real soon. I have been comforting her and watching her closely. Her puppies are moving in her belly and she pants alot. Seems more when they are active. About to prepare her box. So I say my prayers and hope for everything to go well.
