My 12 yr old Beagle started drinking a lot of water in the past few weeks. About a month ago she was diagnosed with a UTI containing e-coli. She was peeing blood everywhere, every 5 minutes or so. She went through 2 sets of treatments. After the 2nd run she seemed fine. 10 days ago we went to the vet (with her 4 sisters) for the annual visit, and a urinalysis showed that she still had it. We started another month treament (same antibiotic). She's be refusing food at night and prefers drinking until the bowl is empty to the point where tonight I'm hearing the water in her belly as she trots in the house. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?
Have you had her kindey levels looked at? Lots of thirst is a symptom of kidney disease. You said you had a urinalisys which would tell them the specific gravity of the urine, depending on how they got the urine in the first place (free catch, cysto). Can you see if your vet can run a blood panel? Kidney disease is scary BUT the good news is if caught early it can be managed. My dog has lived with it for over a year. Only symptom he had was drinking a lot of water...and he was a little bit more lethargic than usual. We did blood work on him as part of a standard 'wellness' exam and BAM! Kidney disease. Never would've known.
So anyway, I don't want to scare you. It could be a number of things, but given that he's had a UTI already..it would be worth it to have your doc run blood work. Also, it worries me that she won't eat..the next symptom of KD is weight loss. And we all know beagles are FOOD HOUNDS!
Better safe than sorry. Keep us posted ok? PAWS CROSSED that it isn't anything serious of course!!! Maybe just a reaction to her meds...regardless get the blood work done! Best investment you can ever make I promise!!
