i have a 2 yr old pom n she was eating good before we bred her but not she wont eat vet cant find anything wrong with her bred her the 29th of june she has picked at food but very little vet says if she dont start eating better by friday hes going to do blood workup anyone else have this problem with a dog after it been bred?plzz im at wits end n worried.
During the first part of the pregnancy it's normal for some bitches to go off their food a bit. I have a bitch who was bred about that same time who is also playing with her food instead of eating it. I supplement with either yogurt or cottage cheese and a bit of canned food and warm water (usually makes the food a bit more appealing). I also keep my girls on multivitamins during pregnancy.
She should start eating better in the next week or so. I wouldn't panic or stress out about it. If she still feels in good weight. I also keep track of weight each week on my girls. If they continue to maintain or gain through their pregnancy I rarely worry about how much they are eating. It's usually the equivilant of "morning sickness" at the earlier stages of the pregnancy.
I would make sure you're feeding a VERY high quality food (Innova, Wellness, Canidae, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Nature's Variety, Nature's Logic... something in that quality range). Not only do they have a higher nutritional value - but they also aren't "watered down" with corn and fillers - so she needs to eat less in order to get what she needs. If the food you are feeding makes a puppy formula, make sure she's eating that - or an All Life Stages formula - NOT adult maintenance food. If you're feeding Purina Puppy Chow, Science Diet, Iams... something in that quality group she's going to have to eat about triple what she would on something like Innova - and being picky and eating less will hurt her more.
In short - it's normal at this stage in the pregnancy for them to pitch food somewhat... honestly, any vet well versed in breeding dogs would also know this...(always amazes me how many vets have NO idea what normal pregnancy tendencies are...)
ty so much for the info my vet has no ideal whats wrong i have been trying everything n the only thing she will eat are cheetos i have pedigree canned puppy food that my vet told me would be good for her n her puppies i even tried her on the meal replacement n she wont drink it ill try her on cottage cheese n see how that works
Pedigree is garbage. Most vets know next to nothing about canine nutrition. Get her on one of the foods I mentioned (or look at Wiley's Dog food sticky on the Dog Talk section). She needs a more balanced diet than just cottage cheese for the pups sake. There is probably nothing wrong with your girl. But she needs a good diet. A pom - even pregnant - probably would only eat 1/2-1 cup of Innova a day. So you won't necessarily spend more money (she'll eat A LOT less).
my bitch didn't go for the cottage cheese, but she loved vanilla yougert. She didn't really eat her full ration the entire preg, and whelping. She ate about 1/2 of her normal food, so I gave her 3 tablespoons of yougert with first born milk replacer (read back for dogs right amount) every night before bed. She came out just fine. I tad thin, but she is very thin for her breed anyway. I was expecting her to be thin after whelping. she eats Innova puppy. REally good food Good luck
update gypsy started eating but would only eat boiled chicked i bought the naturallife puppy food n added chickenbroth n boiled chicken to it she eats it 3 times a day she wouldnt eat it plain shes doing better i did take her off the antibiotics because she wouldnt eat taking them shes not showing any other signs of being pregnant if she is shes 30 days tomorrow. how long before she starts showing?
