I posted earlier about my dog becoming violently ill and almost dying from immunizations I did not agree to for my Min. Scnau. I have since learned that schnau's should not receive Leptosirosis vaccinations as they are allergic to it and it may kill. Anyone out there ever heard of this? Similar experiences? Scout, ever heard of this?
no vet i have ever worked for gives the lepto vaccine because of the risks of side effects it can cause. leptospirosis is contracted thru ingesting rat urine. animals can get it from drinking out of puddles in the street, lakes , ponds, etc. if the water sources have been contaminated by rat urine. we do carry the vaccine for owners who have high risk dogs, such as those that do alot of swimming in ponds and lakes, dogs that live on farms, etc. unfortunately in upstate new york it is becoming increasingly prevalent so it may be only a matter of time before we start seeing it in new jersey. 1 girl i work with has a chessie who does alot of swimming and hunting. she hasn't vaccinated against it yet but is considering it, based on other places seeing an increase in cases. your average pet does not need this vaccine. the risks of giving it outweighs the possible benefits. there may be higher incidences of the disease in your area so the vaccine may be a routine thing. in our area the risks are very low right now. but that may be changing.....
There are a lot of small dog breeds in particular that have problems with the lepto vaccine, including dachshunds, chihuahuas, and pomeranians (I think?). So it's not really surprising. Scout1, nearly every vet in existence in alabama vaccinates for lepto because there's a lot of standing water in our area.
This is what was administered, DHPPaR&Corona, Bordetella and Leptospirosis. I don't know which one is which minniyar, I just know that there were three syringes. Far cry from a rabies shot. The whole incident cost 403$ CND and they had the nerve to try and charge me for a faecal which they picked up off the floor when she lost control of herself (so minus 27.00). I didn't ask for it to be done and because my fosters had coccidiosis (sp) she had a faecal done recently. I'm going back tonight with the boyf to discuss the rest of the charges, we're bringing the bag of her vomit with us for emphasis. I probably won't get anywhere and I should have complained more last night but I just wanted her out of there. Besides, the vet tech had to call him to come down and speak to me about what happened he seemed very concerned, yeah right. RIDICULOUS I'm filing a complaint with the BBB, the Ontario College of Veterinarians as well as sending a letter to the websites where his practice is listed regarding what happened. I may even end up taking this to court, we'll see. I just hope Theg makes a full recovery. So far she's drinking but hasn't eaten anything but that's to be expected.
My Chihuahua had a bad reaction to the Lepto as well. Bella Blue's face swelled up and she wheezed. BayLee her brother had the same reactions with vomiting and fever. We had just moved to a new town and I wasn't familiar with this vet. I was not told that she could have a reaction like this before the shot was given. I had to rush her to another vet because the original vet's office closed at 1 pm right after our appt. The 2nd vet told me that they never vaccinate small breed dogs for Lepto because of the reactions that they can have. Now I question everything they give my dogs. I hope your baby is feeling better soon!
Sorry, I didn't seem more supportive at first, I didn't realize the full scope of things. I agree you should do something about it and not go back to that vet, ever. Also they shouldn't charge you a dime. Glad you dog is recovering.
i am glad carrott that she is home and doing better. i too would lodge a complaint. it seems to me the vet was trying to get as much money as he could. there is no reason he should have run a fecal sample on your dog. that is just insanity. minniyar - in 20 years i have never seen 1 confirmed case of lepto. we have had cases come in that were suspicious for it, including a stray my husband found and he started having bleeding out problems and died a few days later, but none of those dogs ever came up positive.
I too took my pups (hunting dogs) to the vet and they were given puppy shots that contained the lepto vaccine. Three of my puppies had seizures the next day.( prior to this they were all perfectly healthy and had been handled several times aday). They were in intensive care for 3 days. They are all doing fine now.But I did extensive research about vaccines and found that puppies should never receive lepto or coronavirus until 12 weeks and my vet gave it to them at 6 weeks. He has been in practice for over 20 years so he should have known that.He denied that the seizures were from the shots.I say he is wrong!.He did all kinds of testing and never found a thing wrong with them! I did end up with a huge vet bill though.
years ago my min schnauzer made it thru all his shots. 2 years ago my gaint schnauzer and later found out 2 of his litter mates almost diet from that vaccine. i no longer vaccainate my dogs. they get 3 puppy shots my vet gives each vaccine seperate no 2 way or 3 way etc. i also on my gaint didn't give rabies till he turned 2 [1 of his litter mates had a reaction to his rabies at 6 months] read about the dangers of vaccines...after puppy shots get a titer blood test to tell the levels to see if dog needs a certain vaccine. we don't vaccinate are children every year with their childhood shots why do we do dogs?
