I guess this is more of a legal question but maybe somebody knows. If you have a dog that MAY bite, and he is kept in your fenced yard, if you put up a sign that says "beware of dog" does that make you MORE liable? I have been told that putting up a sign is admitting you know the dog can bite and can lead to tons of problems.
I have a beware of dog sign up . The reason why I have it up is because I have a underground fence. I want any one who is walking past to know that we have dogs, don't walk on my property.I don't have a chain link. It's for my protection and my dogs. The sign is informing you of dogs on the property.
All of my akita owning friends say that having a sign that says 'beware of dog' actually causes more problems. It creates the assumption that you knew the dog was dangerous and that is why you put up the sign. Instead of that sign, they suggested a plain 'dog on property' type sign or something similar.
That is what I was afraid of Miniyar - it's a complexing problem for me due to new neighbors that keep dangling their arms over my fence, even though I have verbally warned them they are in great danger. I guess I'll skip the sign. This is a larger rescue dog...who is unpredictable when it comes to biting. I don't know how to get it across to the neighbors that sticking their arms over my fence is a very bad idea.
Sunny ,i had the same problem with my neighbors teasing mygreat dane .call animal control and report it . if you can vidio tape them hanging there arms over the fence my problem that there son was teasing and throwing rocks at my dane .i installed a 6 ft privacy fence . your neighbors are looking for a lawsuit for a dog bite . until i could afford to have the fence put in i supervised my dogs when they went outside .since my dane was teased by this imbicele to put it nicely she doesnt like kids or strangers .and will bite .good luck ohh and the fence does work .know the neighbors son just barks when he hears my dogs outside but he is on report incase anything happens .as for the beware of dog signs i use no tresspassing signs and a warning beware of dog .
I have this kid who just loves to hang out right in front of my house with his skate board. It drives my dogs nuts where I just have to wind up putting them in.I think he does it on purpose to see how far he can get them going because he's bored. Every day after school this goes on.I'm like Matt play in fron of your own house.
Thanks Deb, I'll do that. I am also thinking about putting an electric wire arround the top, and putting a BEWARE OF ELETRIC FENCE sign out. Maybe that will stop them. I guess in the end, I would be liable anyway. I think your right...their looking for a reason to sue. What's wrong with people ??
Is the kid still tormenting your Great Dane ? Stakeboarders...teasers.....if my kids ever did anything like that to dogs......They would probably be confined to their room away from dogs for a long time. Deb --- have you talked to the kids parents ?? Don't any parents teach their childern respsect for animals anymore ?
Sunny i have talked to the parents of this brat and they thought it was funny ,sadly two months ago they bought their son a wolf hybred as a pet . im just waiting to see what happens next if you know what i mean but the 6ft high stockade fence even though was expensive has helped alot . but i still have it documented as a animal cruelty case with him throwing rocks at the dane and the shepard mix which is a hybred too he hasa ?amount of wolf in him too . i tried to educate them that a wolf hybred is not easy to train or keep but they wouldnt listen so i guess they will the hard way .
just to let you guys know i went thruogh the same thing but it delt with some stupid flordians that moved here to n.c.( if you live in western n.c., you know what i mean)just because of the breed of dog i chose to own,pit bulls, they started threaten me. well i talk to animal control and the police. they told me that if i put a "Beware of Dog" sign and a "No Trespasing" sign up and these people or others come onto my land and get bit i an not responsible for what happened. i was gald to hear that and after the cops and AC talked to them i never heard a peep out of them again, except when their dog came into my yard.lets just say that they stood at the property line and called and called their dog but it never went to them.ha ha ha AC came and got their dog and boy were they pissed but could do nonthing about it.see if your area has the same law about the signs. it might look a little tacky but if it will keep you out of trouble, then you should do it.
I've read somewhere else that "BE AWARE OF DOG" is more effective, especially for liability. I don't really know why. BEWARE OF DOG perhaps means the dog could be threatning but the be aware puts the onus on you and not the animal.
where i am you actually have to have a sign on your house and near the road for all to see no matter the breed, i think its just kind of a heads up for anyone coming to your home i.e. mailmen or meter readers
Just because you have a beware of dog sign up does not stop someone from coming on your property, getting bit and suing you. All you are doing is warning someone there is a dog on the property. Putting up beware of dog and no tresspassing signs do save you from being sued if someone comes on your property uninvited and gets bit. This is for unwanted guests - people who were not invited on your property, come on your property and get bit. They can't do anything to you because you warned them about a dog being on your property and you also state "no tresspassing".
Thanks Halo....that makes perfect sence to me, though I might better check with local authorities. I'm not worried about invited guests...only ones dangling their limbs after I have warned them several times not to.
My house is like Fort Knox with all of my signs. The main signs to get is the "No Tresspassing" with the "Beware of Dog". This was told to me by an attorney when I was purchasing my home. Laws might be different in other states. I have a Rottweiler and Boxer. The kids in my neighborhood know not to tease or taunt my dogs. They were also told not to put fingers or hands through the fence even though my dogs know them. If I don't know people who walk past my home and try to put their hands over the fence to pet the dogs, I tell them one time to step off of my property and I don't tell them again. They do it a second time and get bit, that's their problem not mine. I warned them and I do have signs.
leanda---I understand the Floridian thing-----I'm in Western N.C, as well. Although I am a Yankee, I have been here for almost 8 years and we love this place better than anyplace we have lived---I will say that although mostly everyone we have encountered here is great, we have some New Yorkers for neighbors that need to go live in the middle of Montana!! Even though we're Yankees, we don't act like we are!!! The Floridians and New Yorkers (most of them, but not all, since I do know many people from Florida that are wonderful people) like to think they can take over the mountains!!
I had a real problem with skateboarders too, especially since there is a stakeboard park right across the street. My dog, the dumb little luvable monkey she is, would go crazy barking through our front window. Skateboarders found this to be a cool pass time and would throw things at my window. In my neighbourhood I am respected guy because of my size, but this happened mainly when it was only my younger bro at home. Well the day finally came when my dog got her revenge..there were these punks throwing pebbles at the window and it was open and only a screen was protecting the window opening, my little bro was watching but he didn't go outside..next thing you know super dog bolted through the screen ripping right through it and jumping the kid as he tried to run, and she went straight for his family jewels and took a nice chunk out of his pants and underwear (pieces of underwear were still in her mouth). We were never bothered again my bro gave the kid $50 for his pants and that was the end of it. The funny part is if he went to authorities my dobe has the reputation of being the most loving and playful dog ever..which she is, but I am glad she wasn't that day.
