I am truly sorry for the loss of your beloved friend. I own a breed( Dogue de Bordeaux) that has been allegedly breed with other select pit bulls to create a..shall we say an atypical example of the breed.
Forgive my ignorance. I know little about pit bulls and the various types, plus I have never owned one. Though I'm pretty sure a Dogue or two fought in the pits way back when. Bull Terrier, Am Staffs, Staffordshire Bull Terrier as well as others and they're crosses are essentially unknown to me. I've been around some and my warning for perspective owners would be the same as it is for most other breeds. *Not a breed for everyone!! *Do your homework!!!
When I mean not a breed for everyone, I don't think I'd give my grandma, bad hip and all, a Vizsla or Weimaraner as a house companion. Sure that some could work, but probabilities are low.
I worked on and off for a long while as a veterinary assistant way back in days of old. Learn things as you go along. I was always personally wary of Cockers, Chow Chows, Shar-Peis plus American Eskimo and anything that was unusually submissive. Those are my opinions and MY opinions ONLY!!! If you took offense I apologize was not my intention
On a more personal note I would have fired up the car's engine and tried to run that dog over!!!!! Getting attacked on your property by an aggressive and stray, unleashed dog of dubious lineage plus with kids in the mix!! Slam dunk civil if not criminal case. That's why I prefer country living. Not advocating or testifying in any form
Environmental services takes my garbage can away every tuesday, whether it weighs 20lbs 0r 175lbs. Ok..my bad I'll admit it. If a dog attacked me regardless of its size or breed, or attacked my child or wife I'd kill it..or try my best if the big Boca hadn't arrived yet . Has happened more than once but not often.
Hope things are looking up for you. Have a nice holiday weekend and I extended warm greetings to you and yours.
I am very, very sorry for you Moose. I literally shuddered when the image of Stanzy being attacked like that materialized in my head. It's always in the back of my mind; a lot of people let their big dogs run loose, and even with Stanzy on a leash I have a terrible time getting them to leave us alone.
Although I don't support BSL at all, I'm really irritated by pit bull owners who essentially claim that the countless generations of active artificial selection for the ideal fighting dog have borne NO impact on the bully breeds of today. To imply that genetic tendencies and physical attributes are not a major factor in ANY purebreed is either naive or grossly disingenuous. It's not all nurture.
To say that the average APBT/American Staffie is not the pet for everybody is putting it mildly. They tend to be extremely powerful dogs with dominant, independent personalities and often extremely animal aggressive. The potential for danger is clear, and not just for someone's beloved dog or cat. Many dogs do not seem to recognize small children as human beings and certainly do not submit to them (my own dog treats my nephew as she typically acts toward other animals, which is why I must crate her when he visits).
If anything goes wrong at some point in the breeding, socializing, or training of this type, it is easily capable of inflicting serious injury or death, even if it's JUST ONE TIME, even if the dog has always been soooooo sweet to you and your family. They're outstanding working dogs who demand a commited, knowledgeable owner who's not afraid to administer severe corrections if necessary. They should not be banned, but it must be acknowledged that MOST people in this country cannot safely and effectively manage MOST pit bulls.

I agree with everybody who says the breed is misunderstood. If you've never owned one, how can you tell how the dog itself will react? Just because you've seen it on the news?
Well, NEWS FLASH: Get a clue, because like was previously mentioned, Pits are not on top of the list as dogs who most often bite. That being said, why does this subject keep coming up over and over again? I'm sick of hearing the same debate on this topic, and for what reason? Somebody trying to sound smarter than everybody else by saying something like "My neighbour has Pitbulls and I've never owned them in my entire life and have never encountered one or met one, but I know those dogs are the worst dogs in the world because I saw on the news on the other side of the world that somebody got mauled to death." Comeon people, wake up!
MANY people and I mean like a lot, get a Pit Bull because it is cool, gnarly, tight, punky, makes the owner look tough. That is more than stupid. Its more than just a mistake. I knew a couple who were just about to have their fist baby born, a young couple who were not dog smart. They went out a few weeks ago and bought a Pit Bull from an add in the paper. Nobody with an infant should get a new dog. ANY BREED. There is no way you could take care of a new puppy and your first child at the same time. And for god's flippin sake, it was a Pit Bull. I couldnt belive it.
A cocker spaniel might bite somebody, a chihuahua might too. But its not fatal. I bet that your Pit Bull looks really cute in those pictures but I really dont care. I did have one and it killed my sister.
Now im sorry this may put someone over the edge but it was the owners fault any dog in heat will get goofy that dog should not have had free time in the yard it should have been walked on a leash or spayed.I am very sorry for your loss but some breeds need an experianced owner and most people should not own pit bulls.their not killers if they are properly handled.I just hope you neighbor dont get another one!
Of course, though even strictly animal aggression can end in tragedy when owners are irresponsible and let their dogs terrorize other people's pets, as in the case of Moose's poor dog. For that matter, it can sometimes drift to overt human aggression, as in the case of small children, whose voices, mannerisms, and behavior often mimic that of common prey animals. I've witnessed this personally.
I've done a fair amount of research on dog attacks, and both my reading and just plain common sense clearly dictate that some breeds are far more likely to inflict severe injuries or fatalities than others. This is due to the various genetic tendencies that have been imbued over centuries of selective breeding, but also to basic physical attributes: Characteristics that might be annoying in a smaller dog can be flat out dangerous in a more powerful one, and much more difficult to control. The margin for error is far, far narrower, and people had better damned well be aware of it before they get a dog that they may not be able to handle.
Moose, I am so sorry to hear that! I cannot even imagine. My heart goes out to you and your family. I know how much my babies mean to me. I don't understand that owner of the pits. He obviously knew his dogs were dangerous, why wouldn't you secure them so things like this wouldn't happen. I hope those dogs are not coming back to their owners, so you don't have to live in fear again. Hang in there!
DontLikeMuttBreeders, are you saying a pit bull killed your sister? We here at TerrificPets are quick to offer a sympathetic ear, but at the same time, we're hit by numerous trolls that post garbage and flee. What happened? It sounds awful.
Our yard is fully fenced, without any escape holes or places where other dogs can come in. We check it at least once a week just in case. If a dog were coming into our yard or ours getting out, we would definately check to make sure everything was right in the back yard. I understand that this person lost their dog because of some irresponsible owner that didn't keep an eye on them, but don't people believe in animal control anymore?
Jeeze, if a dog were to come in my yard and harass us or my dog, I would contact animal control right then and there, no second or third, or fourth chances at all!!! Thats the truth, so people beware, your dog comes in my yard, you'll be paying to bail him out of doggy jail!!!
