i have not heard PETA's name mentioned once in all of the reports. but the HSUS which is tied in with PETA is doing what they can to help.
I did read that in Louisiana it is against the LAW to Abandon (any) animals!!
i had commented elsewhere that i wonder if the rescue people/organizations could be sued for animal cruelty/neglect for leaving them behind to starve to death. at some point this country needs to realize the importance of pets in peoples lives and act appropriately.

I'm pretty sure that the Humane Society of the United States (hsus.org) doesn't have anything to do with PETA.
The Humane Society does useful things for people and animals and is not all obstructionist. They are a sensible, mainstream organization which recognizes and supports the animal/human bond, while protecting animals from folks who would abuse them.
Scout1 I had the same exact thought, how can they be treating these pets like they are an object and not a living animal that is loved. I'd never ever forgive myself if I left my pets behind. They are scarring people even more, it's disgusting. I'm horrified and feel so bad for the scared little animals being left to die....it's making me sick to death.
While I understand and can relate to the feeling everyone has for their pets. They must simply be secondary to people. This is a cruel idea but would you rather have your children saved or just your pets? I know this is a harsh thing to say, and before you jump down my throat, hear what I have to say.
I thought about this alot actually. How would I react in similar circumstances? I would do EVERYTHING I could to save my dog. Up to a certain point. If for instance it came down to my dog or my GF's life, and me needing to make a choice it would be my GF no doubt about it. I love my dog to death as I am sure most everyone does their own. BUT humans must come first. I can assure you that if I were in the position to physically be helping with any sort of rescue, I would not be leaving animals to starve, unless it came down to a Human or The animal. I am sure that it is a gut wrenching decision to make, and I am sure that people have had to make it but, animals are quite resilient.
I do not want to belittle anyones feelings for animals. Nor do I think that no effort should be made to save animals. But there are still people yet to be taken to safety. Wasting resources when a family could be rescued is sheer stupidity. Saving a lone dog on a roof when there is room and it is safe too is obviously a responsibility.
I think the people need help but they can help themselves also. If the people able to would get the hell out and let the rescues help the people who need it then maybe I wouldn't feel that way. While people can help themselves, the animals can't. If you haven't ntoiced there are many rescues going on for people nad the animal ones have just started. Us supporting the animal rescue efforts will not diminish the rescue of people.
OHH PLEASE!! Petea is HAPPY they are out there. They DONT want you to have pets they kill pets all the time. Hello the 2 Peta people in the news couple months back taking healthy animals from shelter "for Adoption" lol ANd here we all though killing an animal and throwing it in a dumpster behind a Walmart was not a good adoption. YES I am being Sarcastic. Peta wants ALL domisticed animals to be extint!! They dont care about our pets.
Yes scout that one is hilarious. They live in harmony with the animals. Then the dude takes a crap in front of the kids....too funny.
Back on topic. Not everyone CAN help themselves. This is the problem. They now are surrounded and trapped within disease infected waters. Many of whom have open wound injuries. Many are sick, weak, old, so many issues. I feel like alot of people are putting the blame on the people who stayed. Many of these people did not have a choice. Where do you go with no money? No car? NO way out and no where to go? The Superdome for shelter? That was a disaster in itself. But I digress.
The point is that people are still trapped, sick and dying. Yes animals will die and continue to die, but people are as well. How many people do you think have died trapped in their homes from the heat, from sickness. Now ask yourself how many dogs and cat's are put to sleep everyday in an otherwise normal world? How many groups go around trying to save THESE animals? I am not saying the animals deserve this, but I believe the people need to be thought of first.
And as for the original Peta thought. They are probably looking at this as a major victory against animal owners.
Well, you got me curious, so I went to PETA'S site. They are collecting money, providing lists of what you need to do to prepare and sending letters. Hum, sounds like the money they're collecting is well spent. Going for postage perhaps?
Have read the entire link they provide and although the mention providing help in disasters with the funds generously donated, there isn't one specific mention of a cat or dog rescused in the areas hit by Katrina.
They DO mention something about overturned pig trucks
"also enables us to respond to overturned pig trucks—and work to prevent those accidents—and to facilitate many other lifesaving rescues.", but that's about as specific as they get.
Oooh Ivydragon, I couldn't disagree more. How old are you? This is a FORUM and Ash does have the right to express his/her opinion to your thread. Actually Ash's opinions sound like they are well thought and come from a realistic life perspective not a childish attitude of 'it's okay to put pets first that's why it's called terrific pets'.?!
Excuse me! It is NEVER right to put animals before people! There is no excuse for what is going on in the south for people or animals. NO QUESTION. FEMA screwed up! Our federal government screwed up. As a nation who sat around and did nothing, expecting someone else to go help those people, we all screwed up. Red cross said to 'fight the urge to go down and help without training' I WISH I would have went. People and animals are paying with their lives. It is sicking and unacceptable. I can take at least 10-15 animals. I contacted the number and web on this site and no one has got back to me. I don't know what to do other than go down there and get them, and I don't have the finances to do that, or I would. I would most likely also come back with families too. PLEASE if anyone knows a real number for someone who is rescuing the animals I can drive to any major city in a 300 mile radius of MI. I just can't drive 19 hours to MS or LA.
