As some of you know I foster dogs and generally have around 7 dogs living in my house at all times. I go through about 50 pounds of dog food every 3 weeks and I feed Purina Dog Chow since it is cheap. Is there anything better that won't cost me anymore, or only a little more, than what I am paying for the Purina (50 lbs.= $15)? Also keep in mind I am in Texas and it has to be something readily available here. I do live near lots of feed stores and the large pet stores such as Petsmart and Petco.
Unless you have a costco by you that may be the best you can get. But remember the food may be mroe expensive but it is also a better quality and the dogs eat less of it. A 55lb bag of pedigree lasted me about a week were a 40 lb of kirklands lasts a little mroe than two.
Diamond ,the beef and rice or the lamb and rice. It's pretty good qaulity and costs about 20.00 for 40 pounds. My dogs did really well on it . The only reason why I stopped feeding it was because my pet store that I go to stopped carrying Diamond.I now feed Canidae which is 34.00 for 40 pounds.
I wanted to add one more thing with me now feeding Canidae ,even though it does cost more,it lasts longer then the 40 pounds if Diamond by 2 to 2 and half weeks. The Diamond would last a month, the Canidae 6 weeks to 7 weeks. It makes a difference.
My husband has hunting dogs that require the best food to perform well under harsh conditions. We use Sunshine preformance brand. Its only $13.00 for a 50lb bag and we have english walkers and blue ticks and we only feed them about 4/5 cups per day / alittle more depending on which dog. It has 26% protein and 18% fat. I think they have a maintaonce formal he uses in the off season and it comes in a white bag for $10.oo a 50lb bag.(I dont think they like the taste as much!LOL) They all look healthy and happy. We live in SC and buy it from our local grocery stores. Go to www.sunshinemills.com and they might be able to give a retailer near you, but i'm not sure.

oh dutchess...thats a poor dog food needless to say...we are trying to permote better quality dog foods..Yes protien intake in sporting dogs is important..but even when I bred My german shorthaired pointers and brittneys...we did watch the percentages..but sunshine never ever darken our doors..just because its the cheapest surely doesnt mean its any good..look at the back of the packaging...look at the first 4 ingredients mainly...do not buy if corn, corn flour, wheat...ect...these are grains and dogs are not mean to eat them...and they have much more gas and a lot more volume of poop to clean up...since they are eating fillers...do your dogs a favor and feed a better food..I feed mine now diamond..and although not the best by any means...my dogs like it..it has lamb and rice..and several formulas have no corn or filler ( some do) it has essential fatty oils..and although it does have perservatives some dont care about..i dont have an issue with it...My Shepherds have great coats...and are in great health...I have tried different ...better brands for my one finicky shep..and she doesnt care one way or the other...so..back to Diamond for her too..as long as she shares with a pup...she eats well...So..please take time out to look into different brands and do your dogs a service..as I am sure they do for you...stick around and many will post links to see the comparison on foods..its very informative..i hope you enjoy this board as much as I do..take care and Welcome
I see where diamond done killed up some dogs. I've had my dogs on bill jack, Purina One ,Diamond, and I can tell you from a performance stand point , they might fart while hunting but ole John can tree 3 coons , 30 degree temp, through swamp and bush while being feed Sunshine. Feeding them Sunshine still keeps them in top comdition even though its cheap. I'll stick with it. But thanks for your concern.Oh I did feed themNutro at one point and it got too expensive but i'm swearing they dont crap no more or look no worse. My husband wouldnt feed his dogs anthing that would keep them from performing.

The 1st 4 ingred:meat, bone meal, ground yellow corn & ground wheat. I'm sure your saying OH...ground yellow corn...but I think laymen put to much emphasis on the fillers used. The industries want you to think rice is better wheat, whey, bran whatever. Dogs are carnivores and whens the last time you seen a carnivore grazing in a hay field? I think the product the fat is aquired from makes the differance in performance. Like the lamb is not a good source of meat filler for coondogs but chicken and beef are. It just all depends on what breed and what the the job of the dog is.I cant speak for companion type dogs but our working dogs need the fat more so than protien. esp in winter. Yes there are cheap no good dog foods filled with crap but if you find one that can work equally as well why pay more? Just shop around and see what works for your dog and what dont. most house dogs just folow behind their masters and lay around and walk the yard a little and it really dont require the top notch brand and additives to do that. I'd rather fill the couch potatoes with a few fillers to keep them satisfied then give them a lean mean strict diet that leaves them hungry all the time looking for the next oppurtunity to eat.

You know, it depends on your dogs too. What they like and will eat. I guess that's not a problem for hearty eaters, but boxers are notoriously finiky. I feed all of my dogs Purina Healthy Morsels Puppyfood.
I know a lot of people that show dogs and feed Purina. Their dogs are FINE and WINNING. You know what the difference is? They suppliment. Okay, so the food starts out with a filler. Add an egg every other day. Suppliment with your left over meat/fat that you cut from your dinner. Buy one of the 100's of dog suppliments out there.
I'm not switching. Healthy does not good if your dogs won't eat it. I fed Diamond Puppy/Proformance/premium for 5 years, but I was so sick of battling to keep their weight on. My dogs are always a perfect weight now. Just my opinion, but the best food in the world will NOT be right for every dog.
your right Dutchess..some dogs did die..Not in my state..and my formula was not affected in any state..so im not concerned not one iota.
Alicat...your right..I tried to upgrade my finicky Shep...and she would not eat it with any earnest...she wasnt interested in Canadea, Merick or nurtro...but began eating the puppy food ( diamond) when it was in his bowl...not her own self feeder..so..now she eats with him..from his bowl..and she is filling out again..She got finicky again after pups were weaned and she didnt need all the extra food..she turned down the exact food she now gobbles up...its a mental thing i believe...but what ever works to get her to eat...
I bred and raised very active GSP and brittneys for well over 11 years...they were active and in the fields daily training and working with birds or on preserves. Never have I seen such fast aggressive hunters eager to do the jobs they were bred for..And yes..we monitored protien...but didnt feed stuff like that..if your dogs make it and live past 5 good for you...you shouldnt take offence ..you should see people (i am) concerned. There is nothing wrong with learning as you go..take it all with a grain of salt..if you still insist on feeding the worst and being a cheap skate (since it sounds like a total dollars and cents issue to me)...more power to you...but..in the long run it all evens out in the wash...vet bills later or feed decent during the formative years..but then again..vets are expensive...so you might forfit them all together if you use the same theory on that as with food..hay...just my opinion...
We tried switching our English Bulldog from Nutro Lamb & Rice to Purina One and the big difference we noticed was the huge amount of shedding that started and the extra poo bombs in the backyard. We have gone back to the Nutro . . . trust me, she is healthy. I think it all depends on your dog ~ we used to feed our other Bullies nothing but Purina.
A coonhound would starve to death on the 23/14 lamb and rice formula! That is not enough fat for maintainance in a coonhound let alone when hunted hard. As far as living past five, i have no idea where you get your imformation but you are sadly mistaken. My Gr. Nt. Ch. coonhound is 8 and has lived on a similar food his whole life and still pounds the timber regularly(not as much as he used to because i am working young hounds now). My Nt Ch. female is three and hunts atleast three nights a week on similar food.

It's not dollar and cents, its just plain common sence. If its not broke dont fix it. Our oldest working hunting dog is 12 and he functions very well. Not able to hunt as long as the 10yr 0ld and defiantlly cant keep up with the youngins but hes been very heathy and enjoys to hunt. How many 12 yr old house dogs do you know that can stand up to 4 hours barking up a tree after tracking a tricky coon through freezing water and thick brush half the night? and yes all my dogs go to the vet. You would be stupid to aquire a $3,000. night champion and not treat it as prized possesion. I can see you've never been around a serious southern coon hunter! We take our dogs very serious and we're just not stupid enough to fall for retailers blowing smoke up our butts to buy expensive feed that does the same job as some less costly ones. Like I said... you have to consider what breed and what job your dog does so that you can find the food source that's suitable. My "cheap" feed maynot work for your dog but it works for mine and I'm sorry I offended anyone with my opinions. I was just giving my personal experiance with Sunshine products. And let me add, not all Sunshine products would be worthy enough to feed my dogs, as like wise purina brands either. Some good some not so. Depending on each individual dog and its needs.Example: You wouldnt give a diabetic the same food as anormal person.
I just have one question for you people who have working/hunting dogs.Wouldn't you want to have the absolute best food out there for your dog? Especially since the dog is very active. Why would you want to feed one of the cheapest foods? I mean this as no affence , i'm just curious. I know my dogs don't work , are bed potatoes , but I still would only feed them the best kibble out there. Horrible , cheap kibble will slowly kill your dog. Over the years going from different kibbles ,i've seen the difference a better kibble is for my dogs.I've also spent much less on vet bills.
Well rednosered I surely wouldnt feed my hunting dogs cheap feed that dont work. But I would feed my dog an inexpensive one that does!LOL! Ole johns been hunting along time and has never had a vet bill past his normal yearly check up and shots. I'm pleased to know theres people out there that love thier pets. I see way to many dogs in need and its good to see people out here that want the best for thier pets. My vet said Hell would be coming back as a Williamsburg County hunting dog!LOL!If you ever been to SC you'd know what I mean. So I think I'll stop adding on this discussion before I offend all my fellow dog lovers!Good day!!
