I would say the best thing for you to do is go to the vet and have an x-ray done. Is she pregnant by another Maltese? Was the male larger than her? Smaller dogs tend to need c-section. I would strongly urge a vet visit!
The male is a bit larger and it is my daughter's maltese. I took her to the vet and they said that I need to bring her back at 45 days for an Xray and I am just very worried because I will be out of town on a seminar ( for work) when she is due to whelp. Husband and daugher are staying home and the Vet's office is just a few blocks away ( Banfield Hospital) here in Miami,Fl. I am so scared because LAdie is my BABY and I just pray that everything is ok or perhaps she will go into labor while I am still here at home. She mated on 12-29-2007 so I calculated anytime between Feb-27-March 2.
I had a 6 pound Chihuahua had 6 puppies with no problem and a 6 pound Chihuahua had 3 and had to have a c section. You just don't know with these little guy. My small dogs usually whelp after 60 days. But, someone needs to be with them, especially the first time. I have had some dogs that don't seem to know what to do with the first couple of pups. I usually help clean them and cut the umbilical cord the first time. They seem to "get with it" after one of two puppies, but you can loose those pups if no one is there to help. If you have a seasoned breeder friend near, I would ask them for help the first time. See if they can be "on call".
You may want to think about having the breeder that is mentoring you to be on hand for the whelp. Who is your mentor? I am sure they have plenty of experience in whelping procedures and will know what to watch for.
Also, you should always try to use a male that is smaller than the bitch, especially in the toy breeds. Is the vet clinic a 24 hour operation? If she starts whelping in the middle of the night and needs a c section, you may want to have a back up vet, if they aren't 24 hours.
The Vet is in a hospital opened 24 hrs. but I am still worried. She mated on December 29th and she looks so tired and sleeping all the time... I have tried making her food I bought chicken liver abd hearts and made a soup with swanson's organic broth. she is barely eating and if she eats any it has to be frm my hand. What shall I do?
to the above... if you are whelping pups RIGHT NOW, then a) CONTACT A VET IMMEDIATELY! B) post your own topic where others will see your questions. C) Be more clear...... what do you mean "save this one now"?????? The mother?? a pup? What is going on?
"Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else."
I have the GREAT fortune to work with Drs. and I know exactly what to look for. I do not appreciate you giving me commands as if I was a bad pet owner. I adore my Ladie and I just thought I could speak to " friendly" people about her pregnancy. For your info. She does NOT have a temp. Her bowel movements and urine output are both normal but she does look tired and picky about eating. Please refrain from commenting unless you have something possitive to add.
