laminate wood floors? What would you do?

You were not "shot down" the OP was given other peoples opinions, such as they are, this is what happens on open forums.

I said laminate floors look cheap, which unless you are paying for very high quality they do, and by then you can often pay for hardwood.

I am sory if "shot down" offended you. I just meant my opinion was not the same as those that replied until later in the post. My goodness, I never meant to offend anyone...

My sister just had the pergo flooring installed about a year ago. It still looks as nice as the day she had it installed. She bought it at lowes and they did a fantastic installation job. She loves it.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

Ruffian, you're right about the pricing..I could have had hardwood for the price of the Pergo. I also happen to love hardwood floors. However, we made the choice of laminate because it holds up far better to the wear and tear this household bestows on the flooring.

In all honesty, I would have had to have hardwood refinished at least once since I installed the new floors after the hurricanes (2004).

Then again, I love the new bamboo flooring. Some of it is simply beautiful and it is affordable/competitively priced. I also love the fact that it is such a "green" product from an easily renewable source.

I agree with you pyrmom. I think bamboo flooring is beautiful. How does it hold up? I have only ever seen it installed on TV. (You know the home improvement shows) I am really happy with our floors. My husband is a builder and didn't want to get rid of the tile. He loves the floors as well. We were able to save alot of money with my husband installing our floors. It helps to be married to a contractor...

Kdubb A drum sander is what you need to use on your floors. Don't use stripper just sand it. There is no having to fill cracks or any thing just sand all the paint off and put a sealer down. We used polyurathan(not spelled right) don't use any filler it will not match your wood. Sand and seal. We sanded our whole house sixteen square feet in three days, then it took three days to put the polyurathan on because we put three coats on. The thing is you have to move all your stuff out house and you have to stay off the floors till everything is good and dry. I still think you should redo the wood floor you have. Not that I would do it again (hate cleaning grout), but my 20-year-old ceramic tile floors look just as good as they did when they were put in. No chips or cracks, easy to clean (the tile, that is--the grout, not so much...but maybe I'm just lazy and leave it for too long). Virtually indestructible from day-to-day mishaps. That's why I can't reconcile the expense of replacing them.

If I did, though, I don't know what I'd go with. Laminate is so obviously laminate (IMO), hardwood is too hard to maintain (and definitely not a green product). Bamboo maybe? 'Course, there ain't nothin' wrong with a good Berber carpet either, as long as you have the proper cleaning equipment (and you don't have a houseful of pets).

hmm.. well, we are still deciding!

I think I won't sand down the subfloor.... because you can look through the cracks into the basement! ;) My dad (who is an inspector) says no one would see that as a plus. So... we are leaning toward laminate. Maybe laminate in the main area / carpet in the bedrooms... grrr...
too much to do! We are also having someone see if they can install stairs to our attic that is finished but has no access, so we are waiting on the floors to see if we can afford the stairs! lol... I am the WORST at deciding!!
I DO like the bamboo though..... too hard to decide!

My parents just installed laminate floors, and now thay are trying to train the dogs to stay out of the kitchen. They are always deathly afriad it will get scratched.

Max, not sure how the bamboo holds up with daily wear and tear. I've never actually seen it in anyone's home, but have (like you) seen it done on DIY shows and have seen it in the stores. Gets pretty good ratings from Consumer Report though, the last time I checked.

I have had the opposite experience with the tile flooring. Ours has nicks & chips all over from the ceiling crashing in after the hurricanes. It seems it was something All State didn't feel needed fixing/replacing, even though it had only been installed for a year or so before the storms.

I also find the laminate FAR easier on my old back, feet and legs when I have to stand for a long time (like cooking a holiday meal for 25).

I had laminate installed in my kitchen/dining room, hallway, bathroom and down my stairs (the house is a split entry). I'm loving it. I have three Siberian Huskies who insist on slipping and sliding across it. Not a single scratch from toenails. My daughters English Mastiff has been staying with us since before the laminate went in. Still no problems. Had an elderly cat that managed to leave a puddle overnight, no problem. It wiped right up. I'll see about taking a picture and posting for you. We spent about $1600.00 and purchased Shaw Laminate. It is a floating floor. There is the standard laminate padding under it and it snaps together. We bought it at Home Depot and had a large choice of wood color (we used Special Order). My mom has some hardwood and some laminate. The hardwood scratches fairly easy and you have to use special cleaner (according to her). I can use my Swiffer or Swiffer Wet Jet on the laminate.

Just thought I would add, if you decide to go with laminate and do it yourself, make sure to buy saw blades for laminate. Make sure you have a table saw you can use. Our laminate is so strong dh ruined several bits for the dremel tool trying to shave a small part off.

We just installed Tarkett "hunt club" laminate. We raise German Shepherds and they even match the flooring! LOL! Anyway, so far I love them, the floor is gorgeous and looks like hardwood, it has a stonescraped finish, it gives it sort of a ripple which helps to actually hide dirt. It doesn't look so smooth where you see every speck of dirt or dog hair. They are 5 inch planks which give it a more authentic look too, it doesn't have much in the way of actual graining in it so nowhere for dirt to get stuck, but the ripple is what makes it look real. It is super cool, we have it in all areas except for bedrooms,they are carpeted. Good luck with your floors, I love mine.

we installed laminate thru out our house 3 years ago. it was a special order Canadian product bought at Sam's Club. we did the install ourselves with the help of a friend who is a finish carpenter. i would never do this again. even tho it was a pricy material it has not held up well. there are gouges where my husband insisted on draging furniture instead of carrying it. also he dropped something heavy and made a large chip. i would think of using bamboo or a hard wood with several coats of marine grade polyurathane. might give serious thought to ditching husband at same time lol

I guess a lot depends on the laminate. We actually rolled our piano onto the laminate, while we had our carpet installed, and then left it sitting there for two weeks. Not even a dent.

I started a thread about the same thing several yrs. ago. I could not make up my mind until I seen how hard it was for Mandy to walk on the kitchen and laundry room floors. She is getting old now and Tina is not far behind and I don't think anything would bother Kayla. But, since I have 2 senior dogs I have decided to stick with the carpet and change it out when need be. It is so hard for them to walk and I would hate for one to get hurt. Mandy happened to go into the kitchen and was standing on a little rug I have in front of the sink and she would not move. She had gone in there because I also keep a water bowl in there too and I guess she was there before she realized she was scared to walk on the floor. Poor baby, we had to go carry her out. She wasn't about to move off that rug. lol!! Even though I know its alot healther to have laminate or wooden floors I still like the warmth of carpet. Good luck on your choice.
