Maybe in a fantasy world dogs with prey drive don't kill cats but this is the real world and it happens.
Weims are notorious cat killers, anybody involved with the breed to any degree will tell you that. Not ALL of them are but a large majority. Most breeders probably wouldnt even sell you one if you had a cat or at least explain the danger you put your cat into if you got one.
So yes it is true, maybe not true for all dogs but it is true for some. If you don't like it, get used to it or move to Mars where there aren't any animals(at least that we know of).
On tuesday night he severly wounded (i put it down) a cat in front of my neighbors who are now Your neighbors probably think YOU are the bad one,not the dog. He's only doing what you trained him/her to do. Keep your dog leashed when off your property. If I were your neighbor, I'd cross the road everytime I would see your dog.
"Posted: 8:14:23 AM 5/29/2009 I think the big difference is....some people are "training" their dogs to hunt/kill cats.....that is completely difference than the circle of life and animals having instinct to kill. A dog isn't mean until it is trained to be...as far as involunatary manslaughter for a reaction to someone's perfume....get real. That is what is wrong with people these days. Everyone wants to blame someone else for their own issues..."

Exactly! Involuntary manslaughter for someones perfume, seriously? You would sue someone for death by perfume, but think sicking your dog to kill another animal just because you can is ok?
Well I guess those of us with allergies should just be rounded up and hauled away to a place were we are out of your hair. I am sorry to have voiced my opinion on here. now I know how other people have felt when they get beat up for stating something they do. I hope that one day, you all become friends or have a child who has such severe allergies to something you have carry an epi-pen around with them. It isn't fun.
And anyone out there who wears so much purfume that someone next to them drops dead over it, NEEDS TO TAKE A SHOWER. This has become the most idiotic conversation, the poor OP has gotten no real response to her question.
And the next time a dog comes into your yard destroys your flower bed, and you call animal control to cart it away. It gets put to sleep. remember that all my dog is chasing away the cats. They find a new place to live, YOU just killed that dog. I do have right to protect my property. My dogs have NEVER chased anything that was not on my property, and they all stop at my property. I am very sorry you all can not understand a dog who is trained well. I guess when the blind is leading the blind no one ever gets anywhere. Thanks all for showing your true colors.
right back at you!!!! I have certainly had my eyes opened by a few posters on this topic. For the record, I do have 2 relatives with severe allergies that have to carry epi pens....They take complete reposnibility for their actions and don't blame others if they have to use medication for a reaction. They live their lives fully, not in fear with anger towards those that don't have allergies. I am just really saddened by the amount of anger directed towards animals. I will say this again, I thought this site was people that actually practiced what they preached. I have seen a few who don't walk the talk. Seriously though, to claim involuntary manslaughter is just plain stupid....You know what, I think fast food companies should be arrested as well. My gosh how many people eat them and die of a heart attack because their body was so out of shape from all the bad food choices....REALLY!!!!! You are entitled to your opinion...It just so happens the majority don't agree with it. Therefore, it makes you mad and you have to make unjustly accusations at the rest. To JMGREEN...haven't seen a reply from this person. Just another person trying to stir up trouble, or an actual conerned question....? I do believe a few people have voiced concerns on further training methods to try and break this aweful behavior...Best of luck to the op in trying to break the dog from doing the wrong thing.
Well, I actually got opinions from a few professional trainers. It would seem that the "prey drive" is actually a bit more common than I would have suspected. All have said that lots of dogs will have the urge to chase small, furry animals! (chase...not necessarily kill)
What was unanimous, however, was the shock they ALL expressed that anyone would actually ENCOURAGE their dogs to chase, much less kill, neighborhood cats. So it seems that what is needed is not training so much for said dogs...but perhaps therapy for said owners.
MAX-- I am not mad. you are one who has gotten bent out of shape because of a post made. You dwell on the killing thing, like we are making a pen in the basement catching the cats and letting the dogs have them.
I am sorry I am a horrible person, and I do practice what I preach, I walk the walk and talk the talk. I have the right to protect my property, and would be thrilled to catch the cats and send them to the shelter. They wont take them, I can't have them. In your perfect world everyone would love cats, in my perfect world no one would dump animals, and they all would be loved til they died.
I am very sorry that life upsets up so much, and I don't blame people for my problems. You are one is blaming me for paying my mortgage instead of paying to put cats to sleep. Like I said before, if you want to pay my bills, I would thrilled to catch every cat, and put it to sleep. Until then my dog will chase them away. Training is the key here, property lines are the lock. Not being left outside alone without being in the fence yard is also practiced. I am sorry that is offense to you and everyone else. You guys send the money I will send the recipts.
You know what...? I guess I am bent out of shape. I am dumbfounded that someone would teach an animal to chase and kill another animal because it is on its property. Could you imagine if people did the same? It is a barbaric practice. (no matter if it is a cat, dog, gerbal, mouse..etc) Any time you train another living thing to kill another living thing, I think it is wrong. No, you can pay your own bills and I will continue to treat the strays I come across with love and compassion. At least I know I can sleep well at night knowing my actions are not cruel...

You should never teach your dog to kill anything and I mean anything. They may not stop at that. They are the hunters chasing prey as it is. Then you go and encourage it. Now you have taught your poor dog to hunt and kill. That is how people get hurt or children get killed by dogs. They run and the dog chases. Don't you know anything? Sorry but as my quote goes this person and anyone who trains their dog to do this is BAD BAD BAD in my books and the respectible pet owners secret society which if ya own a dog ya belong. You only teach them good behaviors not bad. I am with keeping this dog on a leash from now on or caged up since they ruint it. I don't wanna say put it down as it is not the dog's fault but theirs. You can trap the cats or critters and if no animal control then ya can take em out back, put a bullet in their heads for a clean kill, and bury their bodies deep. That is more humane than what you did. I understand wild animals more than anyone and that is what we did. Least then they don't feel anything longer than they have to. With your beast you created they suffer. I just can't believe people do this to their dogs by training them to attack and kill. You may get lucky and your dog doen't do this to a child since they are always trying to test Alpha positions all the time. A child will run since they don't know any better and the dog will chase to kill. Hope you are all proud of yourselves as pet owners.
There is no such thing as a Bad Dog ... Just a bad Owner.
