I have a 2+ year old mix that i have trained fairly well. Problem is i trained him to go after the dozens of wild cats and rabbits on my property. I encouraged and rewarded him when he chased/killed them. please understand i these were not pets and were a huge problem. My dog charlie had to live at my fathers house for two months while i found a new place to live (lost the property to foreclosure) for two months. He did extremely well with his five house cats two other dogs and the bird. My wife and i have had him at our new place (has 5 acres) for almost three months and he has only chased the ferral cats and rabbits. He has never chased a pet cat to my knowledge or even showed intrest in them. On tuesday night he severly wounded (i put it down) a cat in front of my neighbors who are now terrified...can i retrain him not to chase cats after two years of training to do it? thanks for any help
REALLY??? You trained your dog to kill other animals...? I almost can't believe what I am reading. Have you thought about contacting animal control first and trying to capture the cats that were most likely abandoned? I know all to well about the stray cats..I now own 3. I am afraid you have now created a monster in your dog. I don't think you are going to able to correct the issue. It makes me sad to think of all those helpless animals struggling to survive by themselves and you helped them meet their end...sad, very sad....
I trained my dog to do the same thing, but only the feral cats. They were not allowed to chase any wild life. My aussies were trained to come sit by me until I released them. I didn't give them the free rein to chase anything anytime. What you need know is really a basic obediance issue. A long line for horses makes a great long leash. That way you dog can enjoy his freedom, but you still have a handle on things.
MAX- Get over it. In alot of country areas, animal control won't do anything to help. We do it ourselves. I am allergic to cats, and having a feral male spray everything I own is very upsetting to me. I am sorry you are a cat lover, but when you can't trap them, and animal control doesn't come help. My dog is allowed to chase them. If they kill them so be it. Live in my shoes, and then tell me I am wrong. My lawn furniture, many boxes delivered by UPS, my flower beds, and other things were distroyed by a feral male who had to spray these things. My neighbor finally shot him and killed him. We are still allowed to do that here.
People don't dump your cats, they may end up where they are not wanted, chased by dogs and shot by neighbors.
Illusion..don't tell me to get over it....killing innocent animals is just wrong....I thought this was supposed to be a site where people had compassion for animals...I know all too well what you are talking about...I live in the country and have my entire life. I have seen my fair share of wild animals. I have learned to adapt to that. however, not by killing them....I understand there comes a time to humanely euthanize animals...However, letting them get torn apart by a dog isn't one of them...Thank goodness the strays I have come across found my house instead of yours....
I'd like to know that too....are the feral cats carrying special signs with them to alert the dog as to if they are someones pet or not?
Anyone who would train their dog to kill other animals is a sick individual who should not be permitted to own dogs. Fighting dogs is illegal so explain how teaching them to kill random cats is any less offensive? They may not be your pets thier killing, but they could very well belong to someone.
I can't believe what I am reading! Are you telling me that none of your neighbors call the authorities on you? Good thing you don't live in the civilized world, you NOT your animal, YOU would be standing in front of a judge trying to explain yourself. Your dog would be taken away and you would be at the best heavily fined, worse case, jailed!
I understand the part about the little wild critters, Keeta has gotten more then her fair share of them. But cats? No I can't agree with that. You can try to desensitze (sp) him to the cats some how. Maybe trying to keep him on a lead and when he sees a cat out side and he shows any interest correct him and remove him from the sitaution emedialty. Hope all goes well with you and Charlie.
Shelties: Not enough words to describe how much I love them.
I have no patience for anyone who dumps their pets in the country. I do understand that not all of those animals can be rehabilitated and placed in homes. I also understand that they can be nuisance. Sometimes a HUMANE death is the best option for them. Sicking your dog on them is not humane, in any way.
Then there is the danger to the dog. What happens if you have to move to a more populated area? You can very well end up in legal trouble and your dog's life could be in jeopardy. What if the animal, the dog attacks is diseased (rabies, etc.)? What if it fights back and injures or kills your dog?
Just keep him on a leash. You can't really trust him even if you work with him and he is fine for years. You just never know.
My husky has killed raccoons on a five foot leash and while on a tie out gotten many rats, opossums, and even a sheep she almost killed. All came up to her and I still don't get it.
My other dogs don't have such a high drive but I would never discourage any from chasing anything off. We live on a farm and opossums and raccoons bring disease that can be deadly to the horses and while its a risk to the dogs its what they do as part of the farm.
Warn your neighbors your dog is small animal aggressive and keep the cats at their place.
I have a nutso neighbor who has ten unfixed cats breeding and I can't even keep up with fixing them all. Luckily my dobe is a big baby and likes kittens but if it ever got to the point they were endangering my cats I would have no problem if they went after them.
There is no animal control here and I have spent hundreds at this point taking care of other peoples problems. I'd feel bad for a cat if it got killed but get real here-who is going to take it? There are some mangy sick infected strays that should be put down.
We are also lucky we don't have a ground hog problem here to cuz I think the things are cute! But I know many many horse barns where the dogs know to kill any they see. See a couple horses with broken legs from stepping in their holes and it might not seem to bad.
I think being upset at a dog for killing an animal-especially one bred to do it- is a little odd. Be upset for the animal that is injured, but its your responsibility to keep control of your animal if your worried.
We humanize our dogs to much and they don't see a bunny as fluffy and cute but probably as a gift they worked hard to catch for you.
I trust all but my husky around our cats. If she ever got one thats all my fault cuz I know better. My dogs also all know drop it and have a good recall, even when my dobe is chasing bunnies he will come to me. He is a dog and he loves to chase them. I'm ok with that.
Lots of blabbing here but I think we all come from really different areas and here I can not call animal control to remove cats, raccoons or anything else.
If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons -James Thurber
I am sorry you all think I am a sicko. If my dog catches the cat, more power to them. I don't encourage them to kill, but I am not paying to have them altered, or pay to drop them off at the shelter. Maybe not in all states, but alot of shelters are not charging you when you drop off your animal. It is probably why so many animals are getting dumbed.
I do care about animals. I will be happy for anyone who wants to come try and catch what cats we have left. Everyone here is tried. In fact last year we caught 10 cats, 3 racoons, My poodle lol, and a ground hog. All of which, except my poodle who were release after a short jail sentance where put to sleep. Coco my poodle wasn't trapped but a few mins, so don't you all get your panties in a bunch. We as a group decieded that after Animal control told us there was nothing they could do, and the shelter refused the cats, and we spent hunderds putting them down that we were not doing it again. My dog chases them away, and my neighbor shoots them (it's cheaper). My dog has never killed a cat, or any other wildlife. She is well trained to chase them off the property, end of story. I will have her chase someones pet cat also, I don't care. Do you all not get that I am HIGHLY ALLERGIC to them. I don't want them near my home, destroying my property, trying to get in my house, etc.
MAX--feel free to pay me for every cat I catch and alter, and I will be happy to do it. You can also pay my hospital bill when my throat closes, and I can't breath. Or my eyes swell shut and I can't work. by all means feel free to pay my bills. So the cats around my house can live freely just like you want
Illusion: I trained my dog to do the same thing, but only the feral cats....yet in the next post....My dog has never killed a cat, or any other wildlife. Which one is it. I get that you are highly allergic....does it justify killing an innocent animal? I think not...I have paid my fair share for helping the homeless animals out where I live. A word of advice, even if the humane society charges for a drop off, it is surely going to be cheaper than any spay/neuter fee....at least the animal can be humanely euthanized instead of murdered. I am not saying your allergies aren't important. Taking the life of an animal that was most likely deserted is sad. If these were dogs would it make a difference?
Just because you are highly allergic, that doesn't give you the right to take a life, especially in such a cruel and inhumane way. What do you do to a person who is wearing perfume that offends you-do you kick them in the shins? What if someone is allergic to that cigarette that you're smoking-can they get their dog to attack you? You and your neighbors all sound like horrible people and you deserve each other. The cats deserve much better.
Where we live, shooting is for sport and wildlife control only - not for killing abandoned cats - We have many, many cat rescues who trap/spay and also give rabies shots, (tho, this may shock many people - vaccinating feral cats prevents disease in livestock, isn't that a hoot) They also will set traps, retrive them, relocate or humanely euthanize feral or rabid cats. And, for free or a small, very small, donation. Approach is everything with a cat rescue. they can be accommodating, just use the right approach How about we all set traps, catch the cats, then shoot them while in the trap? Sounds like everyone maybe doing this already. This, by the way, is highly illegal for ANY animal to be trapped then shot. And also, I think, weird. I have three dogs, all on leashes on my 10 acres of property, I also have four indoor/outdoor cats that they were not raised with, and they consider them part of their pack. My dogs are trained only to be protective, not predators. I find this post very inhumane and compassionless.....my opinion has changed on many of these people who I thought very highly of previously
I have a few weimaraners who kill anything that is small, furry and isn't another dog. If that means its a cat, then so be it. I don't necasarily care for them killing cats but they are a hunting dog at heart, its in their blood. I don't own any cats because it would be an automatic death sentence. For the most part I do not have a problem with strays and it is obvious why. Fortunatley for the cats, they have learned to stay off my property.
Note: I did not train my dogs to kill cats, they came by it naturally and I never fostered the behavior, I even tried to curb it. Anybody with a high prey drive breed will know this.
To the OP, I doubt you will ever be able to do much with this behavior. Maybe with the VERY best dog trainer to help but unless you have one of those around just plan on dealing with the situation the best you can.
I believe everyone has their own opinions, and they should, that is what this website is for. But I do not hear anyone talking about diseases that these wild animals carry! If your dog is chasing, and or killing them, don't you worry about your animal catching a disease from them? I know dogs eat raw meat, but they cannot fight off some of the diseases that these animals carry.
Sassy, that is absolutely NOT TRUE about hunting dogs. I own 2 hunting dogs that actually DO what they are bred to do, and they have never killed ANYTHING. A good bird dog is NOT going to kill a bird (or any other critter, for that matter) A good bird dog has what is referred to as a "gentle mouth". In other words, it can retrieve any animal and bring it back to you unharmed. So if your weims are killing animals, don't blame it on them being hunting dogs.
Ok for those of you who can not understand plain english, I guess I have to explain. My dog's are trained to come sit by me, and then once release they can chase what ever they want. I only let them chase out door cats on my property. I could care less if they are feral or not. My dog have never caught one. If it does so be it.
And to anwser your question, if someone is smoking or wearing purfume or anything else that sends another person into allergic shock, or to the hospital. They yes they are reponsible. If the persona dies, then yes they should go to jail for involuntary man-slaughter. No one thinks about the other person. I was a smoker, and have just quit. EVerytime I was around people, I ask if they minded before I would lite up. Those who did would much rather watch my dogs or my stuff why I stepped away. I am sorry you all only care for the cats, not the people who live with them. Your outdoor cats kill all kinds of animals to survive. My dogs chase cats so I can survive. I don't see the difference. Please come get them I don't mind.
I think the big difference is....some people are "training" their dogs to hunt/kill cats.....that is completely difference than the circle of life and animals having instinct to kill. A dog isn't mean until it is trained to be...as far as involunatary manslaughter for a reaction to someone's perfume....get real. That is what is wrong with people these days. Everyone wants to blame someone else for their own issues...
