many of the breeds who currently get their ears cropped and tails docked look just as god without the cropping and docking EXCEPT the doberman pinscher. they look dopey as all get out without their ears cropped. they are so regal looking with the ears done. if i were to own a dobe it would have ot have its ears and tail done. the other breeds i like with floppy ears.
Techncialy any dog can have their ear cropped, it is just cutting the excess ear leather off.
However, any vet who crops should only crop breeds who have standards that allow for cropping. I know my vet will only crop a purebreed and only if the dog is young enough and she feels the owner will provide correct aftercare.
If ear cropping should be banned, so should humans getting ears, bellies, and tounges pierced etc. Also tatoos. I don't think it's that big of an issue. Plastic surgery should also be banned if thats the case.
No dont ban tattoos and piercings!! lol i would be lost without all mine.
I dont have a problem with cropping and docking as long as its done professtionally with as little discomfort to the animal as possible. Besides docking and cropping are done sometimes for medical reasons.
Pizazz, The difference with humans getting Piercings, tattoos and plastic surgery done is....That we make the decision to do that to ourselves. Dogs on the other hand are at our mercy. We do what we think looks right for them or whats the breed standard..etc.
Other than that I really could care less if someone has the crops or docking done. Most breeds look good either way. But being the owner you have to be sure that yoyu can do the absolute best when it comes to the after care...Just the same as you would do for yourself....
What upsets me about ear cropping is when the breeder does it themselves when they are just a few days old (lots with schnauzers) and they end up looking like crap. I think they should be done at 12 weeks of age when you can see the shape of their heads and face. I also think it should be done professionally by a vet at the appropriate age!
To the person who stated, if ear cropping is banned, then plastic surgery and piercings shoudl be banned also. I think that's an ignorant statement because PEOPLE have a choice to do that to their own bodies. Dogs, however do NOT have the choice!
I think the if it were banned the breeder would do it at home and I have seen some bad cuts and Petland a know mill buyer. the min pin ear are cut for the size head they have as a puppy. the ears will look horrible. I had my male cut my breed siad they would never stand they were to big. my female stood with a lot of rubbing on my part.
Ya, i just bought a male Boxer puppy last week (He is now 13 weeks old) I'm gonna leave his ears natural because he's just so darn cute! And i wouldn't want him to be in any discomfort or pain. Oh, his name is Tank by the way :)
I would also have to agree with rebel and Petitefe on the plastic sugery and piercings, we make the choice to do that to ourselves, dogs on the other hand dont they depend on us to make the right choice. Just think of this, If you were a dog would you want your human to cut away at your ears? i no i wouldn't. and the worst part is, you wouldn't have a choice either way.
If it was in my best intrest and made me look how the creators of the breed intended then yes,if I was a dog,I would want to be cropped:) I am sick of seeing peoiple talk about it when they have no clue about it too!
I would never to it but we asked our vet about it and his reply was "I will never do that to an animal, I have turned away clients because they wanted me to do it and I don't believe in it, it is only cosmetic and the pain the poor animal goes thru, I just refuse to do it" I really like our vet and that just made me like him more, someone who stands by his beliefs even if it means losing money. Something you don't see much of nowadays.
I personally dont have any problem with getting dogs ear cropped. We get dogs to perform dangerous jobs that we do not do ourselves like persuing armed suspects. I think getting their ears cropped are small prices to pay for a lifetime of petting and treats.
