I'm 58 so I guess that makes me "great-grandma" - :-) Happily married for 38 years this coming July 4th ("Independence" Day, go figure) - :-) We have a terrific 37 year old son & a darling of a daughter-in-law, & my youngest (40 year old) stepson has made us "grandpa & grandma" so yep, we count our blessings.
The dogs in my life begin with Lucky, when I was 4 years old, probably the first registered Shiba Inu brought into the United States back in 1954. We were in Japan with my Air Force dad & brought Lucky & Taisa (a Shiba-mix stray) home with us. They blessed us with a litter of pups (born on MY bed) - :-) - in July of 1954 & while Twinkle Toes went to my grandparents, Kim went to my grandparents best friends, Skipper went to my dad's first cousin, we kept Musco & he was my very BEST-est friend until I was 20 years old!
As a teenager we added Taco to our family, a beautiful Pomeranian, who (along with Musco) helped me get through those awkward teenage years.
Cuddles, a cockapoo, joined me in my first "grown-up" apartment (was I EVER 20!?!?!).
Brownie (huge mix of SOME kind), given to us by Jim's barber, our first dog as a young married couple with a baby.
Samson, another cockapoo, also joined the family around that time.
Hobo, a chow mix, was a stray given to us by our mailman after it followed him around for weeks & then the weather turned bad.
Leo I, a German Shepherd mix that tragically had distemper when we brought him home as a 10 week old pup.
Leo II, another German Shepherd mix, who stayed with us through old age (his, not ours - yet - at that point).
Babe, a German Shepherd mix stray who wandered into our garage & our hearts & home.
Angel, a registered German Shepherd who also stayed with us throughout her old age.
Chips, a (originally emotionally starved) registered German Shepherd who was given to my husband by a coworker who had Chips for 3 years before deciding he'd rather have a Doberman Pinscher.
Shadow, a husky mix, saved by my sister in Fairbanks from being "culled", driven down & hand delivered to our happy home (5/10/83 - 5/15/98, RIP old man).
Moose, found (with his littermates) under a woodpile by my sister in Fairbanks & shipped to us.
Tundra, a Alaskan Malamute who dug a HUGE den in our backyard, including a "front door" & a "back door", but we loved her to pieces too.
Sluggo, a ABDA registered American Pit Bull Terrier, probably, well, undoubtedly my husband's BEST-est friend ever (besides me I hope), RIP, Sluggo, 4/29/03, cancer at age 9.
Shiloh, a pit bull mix, a stray found by hubby living in a den she had made for herself in a levee near his work site, when she was only 8 to 10 weeks old. RIP, Shiloh, 6/24/05, at age 12 (ruptured something, I was too traumatized to remember). She went EVERYwhere with me for 12 wonderful years!
And that brings us to: Cheyenne, a pit bull/lab mix born 03/03/03, a darling! - & Spanky a "100% pit bull", born 9/12/04 - who just HAPPENS to be the FLUFFIEST "pit bull" WE'VE ever seen - think border collie! -- :-)
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane, for allowing me this opportunity to remember all the wonderful dogs I've shared my life with that have taught me invaluable lessons in life, love, loyalty, laugher, & yeah, tragically, loss too.
