Savannah, I do plan on being licenced through my home state once we get our kennel/rescue set up. But that is just a state licence. In our state, being licenced means being subject to inspections, and extra paperwork as well.
I guess I just always pictured a USDA kennel as being more of a 'commercial breeding operation'. Thanks for setting me straight.
Hi there, If you check some of the older posts, around 6/5 on Puggles and others and you will see that we have a rescue Puggle almost 8 months old.
The very best advice I can give you is TRAINING. Rocky just finished his intermediate obedience training. I know you can't walk your dog every day, but surely someone can help? It is the best money we have ever spent.
You bet they are filled with energy. OMG! I thought at first, he is possessed, LOL. Nope but full of energy You bet!!
I know you may have made an error by purchasing from a place that may or may not be a puppy mill, but you now have the Puppy, God Bless you. I know you will love her to death and from my experience I can re-iterate what you already know, they want LOVE!!!
They are very stubborn but once they learn, they are good forever I think. I do know that treats work. We used Cheerios!! Yep, I guess just about anything works.
Rocky used to run in circles all the time, we just let him go. She will stop when she gets tired. He still does it once in awhile but not as much.
Good luck to you, You are going to have a great time with her. Post some pictures = )
Husky, i think i MIGHT know where your confusion is. Kennel/rescue organizations, kennels for breeders, we all have to have a kennel liscence for our towns and cities and stuff like that. The State Dept of Agriculture lisence is to do business in that state as a "pet dealer" and yes you are subject to regular inspections of kennel/animals/paperwork. The Dept of Ag is for any person or business that sells more then 24 puppies in a calendar year (i'm sorry in my state that's the number) and certainly for rescue operations such as you are going to be doing. Good luck, great thing you will be taking on. Sad though, I personally could not do that just for emotional reasons.
hi Norma~ just, i do love her to death. the day i brought her home everyone told her she was a lucky pup. and oh, those circles. Pugslee runs in a circle b/t 4 rooms in the open floor plan. and she is very talkative. i can say however that in the last 2-3 weeks she has changed a little. listening more, running less circles. now everyday about 5-6 i sit on the couch and toss her toy and she runs to get it and brings it back, repete this action for the wull hour and she is totally pooped out.
another thing about Pugslee, not bad, kind of funny. She loves to eat ice., if she hears one of us in the ice bucket she is right there sitting at attention. I dont even have to give the down command, she sees the ice and she lies pron on the floor, its really funny.
But she is delicious and loving. the only animal in the world that will love you more than it loves itself (the dog)
Okay, I think I understand now. I think my state has a limit on amount of puppies sold in a year also. Since we will only have a couple of litters per year (IF we decide to breed), I wasn't worried about it. I'll have to go back and check again.
Pugslee, after all the time I have been on this pet forum this is the first time that anyone actually lessened and asked questions to find a good breeder that I know of. I commend you on wanting to learn for the sake of the dogs.
Most get mad and want to argue not hearing what happens to the poor byb and puppy mill dogs.
Does this sound familiar guys " They are a nice Amish family and this is their first litter"
Pugslee Rocky would kill for an ice cube....When we sit outside we bring a small plastic pitcher filled with ice cubes and he manages to eat 4 or more. Its hysterical. All you hear is crunch crunch and they are gone. My teeth hurt listening. He also drinks water when we walk, sprinkler water. Run off water, rain water etc. He always has a full bowl of water at home, that he also manages to empty often, but LOVE more than enough. He wants to love and be loved more than any dog I have ever had. He tries very hard to please. Good boy, means the world to him. Your very lucky. She will be as sweet as can be and your love for her will continue to grow. I am so happy for you. It has been a wonderful time. I figure we have probably 13 + years with him. I am so happy for you
Pugsley, normad, (alicat if you are out there) Today is puppy day. We will be picking up Kaylei (the same mixed breed as yours) tonight. My son is moving back in tonight - this will be so good for him especially if Kaylei behaves like yours. I have to check into the puppy training classes yet. soooooooooo excited our first dog.
norm~ pugslee sounds very much like rocky. and you're right about the sound of the crunching ice. i dont know how she does it. but she just chumps away. and, she loves to play and loves to love and loves attention.
dante~ congrats on your puppy. she will bring a lot of love, fun, and most of all energy to all of you. they truly are a lot of fun.
Debsdog~ thank you for the form. I have filled it out the best I can and sent it back. The breeder address provided was only a p.o. box. I will be so heart sick if she is from a mill. I understand now that breeders dont sell to pet shops. But i have always made it a point to ask. And i was told they dont use mills. The fact that I supported that make me upset. I mean I am totally inlove with Pugslee, but still.....
I agree with Wiley. You are the first person (that I have ever seen) take this experience and learn from it. You have your Pugslee now, there is nothing you can do to change it. But use this as a learning experience.=)
thank you all for your kind words and for helping me learn the difference, and that pet stores only sell mill babies, but say they are not mill babies.
but there is something i can and will do, once i have the proof, in hand (and I will) that this is a mill where Pugslee came from, and that the pet store "mis-represents" themselves as not selling from mills. I will contact my State Attorney's office for Consumer protection, and unfair trade practices.
So, yes, I can and do love Pugslee (very very much), but now I have this knowledge, and i will do everything to make a difference. the light of knowledge is power, and it goes out if not used. I will make a change, at least with this store. They will no longer sell puppies and tell people they do not sell from mills.
We also 'acquired' a puppy some years back that came from a local petstore. The folks who bought it had decided it was too much work and of course store wasnt going to take her back, so they came to us asking for us to take her in and look to adopting her out. We visited the store she came from, who has signs postes that they do not support puppymills and buy only from reputable personally inspected kennels, lmao. The pups was indeed AKC, so we did a researh to see where she originated from since when a puppy is gotten from a pet store, it comes third party signed to the business name. One we got the papers in which the breeders name is always printed on, we started searching....lo and behold we found the "reputable, personally inspected, no puppymills kennel" What do ya know it was an amish puppy mill! Anyone with the last name YODER is a dead giveaway as amish anyway. So we viited and was sickened to ee the typical puppy mill scenario....tons of breeds, most of all of them crossed, multiple dogs in one chciken wire tiny cage in the barns, etc.
Got to know the pet shop owner over the years, turns out they admitted they never personally inspect any breeder, they dont have the time and frankly dont care as long as they can get them cheap enough to make a profit, makes no matter to them what condition they came from. They post the signs to appear reputable because alot of folks are getting wise to puppy mills.
End of story....they are now out of business! Good riddens.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
decided to go to the mall today (hardly ever go here) and of course when I walk by the Puppy Store (or Puppy Mill as I like to call it) I have to look. Black and White Shih Tzus looked yellow and black. There was a 5 month old yorkie that already looked bigger than my 3 year old 7lb yorkie and had floppy ears. Just makes me sad. I actually saw a poster though that was titled "The Teacup Myth"..that I was very surprised about..surprised that they actually said there was no such thing as a teacup..
