Reresentative Tyrone Yates, 33rd district, Cincinnati,Oh, has introduced language for house bill 568 that will require every single pit bull in the entire state of Ohio to be surrendered to th dog waarden for euthanasia. Furthermore, probable cause of owning a pit bull will be basis for a warrant enabling officers to enter your premises, seize your dog, and kill it within ten days.
If this strikes you as urban legend it isn't. The legislation is available here: www.legislation.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=127 HB 568 The bill's author, Tyrone Yates can be reached here: Telephone# (614)466-1308 Fax:(614)719-6986 E-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org
E-mails are fine but nothing will make an impact like a phone call. HB 568 Sec. 955.111 "Not later than ninety days after the effective date of this section a person who owns, keeps, or harbors a pit bull dog on the effective date of thissection shall surrender the dog to the dod warden.
After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the pit bull and turn it over to the dog warden to be killed!
Who's the bright spark that came up with this? I hope the whole state of Ohio comes down on the capital legislation building, and protests until they give in. That's the worst thing I've ever seen for stereotyping. How long before it's all over the U.S? I'd say a lot of people would be moving because nobody would ever take my dog and kill it.
OMG!! I don't even know where to begin!!! That is the most obserd, inhumane, ridiculous, uneducated thing I have ever read!!!! What are they thinking?? I am soooooo upset right now!! How dare this state try to condem these animals!! It is obvious the idiot who wrote it is a firm believer in propaganda..and yes i do appoligize for my spelling....!!!!! These animals are the sweetest most loving animals I have ever owned! It is a shame that they must suffer because there are owners out there who abuse them for the wrong reasons. Ohio should be held accountable for their stupidity and they should be forced to get educated on these animals!!!!! There is not a person on the planet that could walk into my house and take my dogs.....forget the "beware of dog" warning...more like "beware of owner'!!! If they want to kill all the pits, what are they gonna do about the other animals that are "vicious".....hey ohio......kiss my rebel A**!!!!!!!!!!
Is ohio a horrible state for animals or what? It seams I hear about bad My dog otis actually came from a pound in ohio. he had kennel cough, girardia and coccidia and scratches and scabs all over. Doesn't ohio also have a lot of puupy mills? I hope this legislation isn't adopted by more states
I wonder what this congressman thought he was going to accomplish with this bill. Would it temporarily reduce the number of pit bulls and other similar breeds in Ohio, yes, would the money spent on enforcing this law be better spent on breaking up the dog fighting rings and all the illegal activity that goes with them, definately a yes. How are they going to tell the difference between a pit bull, a staffie, or a bull terrier? Most of these dogs do not pose a threat to humans so what is the reasoning behind this bill? Automobiles maim and kill thousands more people each year than this or any other dog breed, but I don't see anyone wanting to make cars illegal. Just where is the money going to come from to pay the enforcement officers? From increased taxes on the general population or from increased license fees paid by other dog owners?
Whats really really sad is a site i came accross. The site is so anti pitbull that its pathetic. People that come accross this site and do not understand the breed, will surely come away with a negative attitude towards them. Ohio is not the only state that is banning this breed. And soon more and more states will follow. We already have several counties here in Washington state, where the ban has taken effect, and it is spreading. People who endorse this type of breed banning are misinformed and do not realize that it is just a prelude to more and more breeds being added to the list for banning. If one breed is banned, others will follow. I will never endorse anything that eradicates an entire breed based on placing the blame on the breed and not the owner. Any breed that is taught to fight, will do just that. Akitas were used in Japan to fight bears in pits. Are they born with the instinct to fight ? NO. Thats a totally rediculous assumption, but yet there are those that use that same ignorant assumption against pitbulls. Hopefully people will stand up and fight against BSL. Today its Pitbulls, tommorrow it will be Rottweilers, Gsds, and so on down to the chihuahua, until eventually no one will be allowed to own a dog at all. This is from the site i was refering too and its obvious that they are a pro ban site.
The people in the State of Ohio voted Tyrone in. The same will have to vote him out. If enough dog lovers in the state,(and I bet there're quite a few) start calling, faxing, and emailing, Tyrone might want to reconsider his HB.
Denver also won't permit Pit Bulls. I am so very glad I don't and won't live in either place. It is becoming increasing important now to find out and know such laws and restrictions, lest our pups be forceable taken and killed. There would be a serious battle at my house for my Rusty!
The legislation is even more troubling because the idiots who will be trying to catch these 'vicious' dogs, don't even know the difference from a Pit Bull to A Staffy, to a Pug. It's a terrible piece of legislation, every way you look at it. I like Texas's law of coming down hard on the owners, to me that's the best solution, as long as the dog isn't euthanized.
That's why I'm a proud Texan! We have a state wide dangerous dog law that is determined by behaviour and not breed. Because this is a state law in is unconstitutional for any city or town to enact an ordinance that would contradict this law, YEAH! Unfortunately it hasn't made any major difference in how people care for their dogs. Their are as many strays as ever and you have to prove ownership befor you can proscecute.
It is truley awful that this politician cares more about publicity than dogs, their owners or even the dog bite victims. What else can you expect from a politician. Dog fighters and those that let their dogs roam are already breaking laws, why would they care about breaking another. You are completely correct in that those who continue to be irresponsible dog owners will simply move on to a different breed. Once they ban Pitbulls they will come after my Rottweiler, then Dobies, Boxers, GSDs and then every other large breed.
On another note what does it say about the state of our country when the government can come into to your house and seize your property with no cause? Perhaps those who have suffered this injustice could file suit for all the money they invested in their pets. Even when the government forces people out of their homes for development purposes, they have to compensate them.
Dusty I checked out the site and was completely horrified. This group or person is truly posting a one sided & extremely LAZY argument, basically looking for any article (fact or fiction) that will place blame on the breed, instead of facts. While the true stories are sad... placing all the blame on the breed instead of the irresponsible owner is truly a disgusting & uneducational display of laziness.
"Police are now trying to locate the dog and its owner." This quote alone, from an article posted, sparked fire in my blood. Not only do they not know the breed of dog they also let the owner off scott free. The next line "She said they discussed how the four unleashed dogs, which are regulars to the beach, are not controlled properly." Why hadn't she called Animal Control about the owner before?
It seems to be the same stories over and over again... they assume its a bully breed and they knew the dog was a nuisance but failed to act on it. I don't know about the rest of the posters but if a loose dog is in the neighborhood, no matter the breed; I am calling Animal Control or locating the owners, period. I don't let my dogs off a leash unsupervised why should anyone else be allowed to? If someones dog is being unrully at the park of even the vets office I am the one immediately confronting the owner asking them to either leave or ask the counter for a muzzle. If my dogs aren't going to be out of line... Yours (no matter the breed) aren't going to either. *stepping off my soap box*

Until the general public ,as a whole, can keep others from condemning and prosecuting the innocent and violating the trust of others, I believe we have a responsibility to take care of the drugs and violence without persecuting "what ifs" and "maybes". We still have homeless people, child molesters, drug dealers, rapists...and we are all just trying to write more laws against the down trodden for possibilities that their dogs "might" do something, instead of paying tax dollars to enforce the laws already on the books against people who apparently disregard authority anyway. It seems counterproductive to make laws that only law abiding citizens are being punished with.
I agree completely, people want to pass laws that would liscense breeders, ban pit bulls, and make spay neuter mandatory. Why would any of these work when the laws we have aren't enforced. If anti-cruelty laws were enforced it would greatly reduce the number of puppy mills. Someone mentioned the law in Texas that now holds owners responsible if their dogs attacks and I agree with that law. However, if the leash laws were better enforced, attacks would be prevented instead of punished. Isn't it better to spare the victim and have one less inmate in an already overcrowded prison system?
There was a very publicized incident in Lubbock recently where dogs that were supposedly pit bulls mauled several mini horses used for therapy work. In the very first report it was stated that the owners agreed to let AC put the dogs down. I emailed the station about what punishment the owners would face. I was told that since no humans were injured the only thing that the owners could face was a $75 fine and AC hadn't even followed through with that. (More than one dog equals more than one fine and I would think an ailing shelter could use all the revenue they could get.) Instead of holding the owners responsible for breaking the law, AC and the media prefered to demonize an entire breed of dog for the actions of two. AC has also started hassling anyone who owns the breed and looks for any reason to seize them. Several have be "accidentally" put down at the shelter b/c of "miscommunication." I am glad to say that the organization that owned the horses sued the dog owners and hopefully they will succeed.
I'm not totally informed on the pit bull issue but my simple and uninformed opinion is that this ban or forced euthanasia is ridiculous. Cars kill or hurt more people than pit bulls but who gets punished? The driver. The driver requires a licence to drive this killing machine so why not require a licence to own a pit bull? (I'm not saying pits are killing machines but making the same ridiculous assumption as some governor) I know it sounds ridiculous too but pit bulls are sweet dogs but they also need an experienced owner. I wouldn't pair a first dog owner with a pit bull. Or have training classes for breeds that may require more experience such as the pit bull. I love rottweilers but I don't think I'm experienced enough to handle one. I'm sure that the basic obedience training would be fine as long as you are a consistent and conscientious owner but if this is such a huge issue with these States, then why not provide education rather than obliterate the breed? Put the responsibility where it belongs,on the dog owner, not on the dog!!!
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
i live in ohio n i have heard about that i dont own a pittbull but i have friends that have n they may loose theirs because they cant afford $500 for the insurance each yr theres a law in ohio that requires all pit rott shepherd akita n chow owners to have insurances on their dogs n if they dont they can loose the dogs or be evicted from the property
This is an outrage! I live in OH, just north of Cincinnati, outside of Hamilton County. I know this has been a hot topic for years, but this is inhumane and wrong. You are right, most police and animal control officals cannot even properly identify a Pit Bull. I own a Chow, and the first puppy training class I went to, the trainer actaully said to me that she thought Chows should be banned before Pit Bulls, and she works in a vet clinic! Dogs are not responsible for their actions, people are. There are irresponbilbe dog owners out there as we all know, those people need to be targeted, not the animals. I hope people in Hamilton County go after this guy, I emailed my representative even though I'm in a different county, this is just terrible. This type of legislation just opens the door for more irresponsible decisions by our law makers, time to step up and speak out!
Rossetta the $500 insurance is depending on your landlord hints the reason you would be asked to move or get rid of the dog. That does not mean if you pay $500 you can have a pitbull if and when the law is passed. If and when the law is passed you can not have one regardless of what you are willing to pay unless you pay to relocate that is.
Ok heres the thing this is becoming nonsense and everyone knows it. i have two pitbulls that i love to death, i have been put in jail to save ones life numerous times. All this talk about killing this breed well... I SAY LET THEM TRY TO KILL MY CHILDREN!!!!!!
There may be Ohio Residents that fed into the negatives of this breed but what about the good of this breed????? They are very loyal, intelligent and obidient breed. The animals in question are just following the instructions of their owners. If anyone should be prosecuted for these crimes it should be the owners that make their dogs participate in fights until their death. WHERE ARE THE RIGHTS FOR THE ABUSED, NEGLECTED AND DEAD PITBULLS FORCED TO FIGHT TO THEIR DEATH???? WHO PROTECTS THEM, HUH, NOONE THATS WHO. ALL THEY DO IS SAY KILL THE BREED. I SAY BLAME THE DEED, NOT THE BREED. I know noone will really pay attention to this blog put I urge you to take time to read this blog and help our pets. I think that its time to focus all this money and time, that is being spent on trying to kill a great breed. What about all the dope dealers that are killing our children 10.00 at a time???? They get a slap on the wrist and here we get our families torn apart, and then as parents we have to explain to our children why their pets and best friends are being but down and that they are evil. so I ask this question when the dog warden takes our dogs are they also gonna tell the children why they have to get rid of their pets???
Jokersmomma, I agree with 100%. I too own two bulls and they will not be denyed. My wife and I feel very safe in our home because of them and as you mentioned they are very loving to us. The issue disturbs me also and I for one am willing to join any united effort to oppose any type of discrimination towards Pitties. We stand united on this one!
